Confused about repairs (coilpack & fuel injector)

The beginning of this past summer I bought my 95 Maxima (AT) with 78,000 miles. Within the first month of owning it the fuel injector in cylinder #2 had to be replaced. A couple months went by and then my CEL came back on after having a really rough idle the day before. So I brought the car to the place where I bought it and they scanned it for me. A code came up for a cylinder #1 misfire due to a fuel injector. Now, I just switched warranty companies, so the guy I bought the car from said that I'd have to wait 30 days to get the car fixed because the warranty company will reject a claim made so early, stating that it was previous damage.

So, They reset the ECU and put in fuel injector cleaner and the rough idle virtually disappeared for the first week. So I drove the car like a grandma, warmed it up at least 10 minutes before driving it and all very gentle accelerations.

The second week my CEL came back on for two days then shut itself off, and the third week it went back on again and shut itself off two days later. Now, it's been 30 days and I took the car to a Nissan dealer that the guy I bought my car from does business with. After I dropped the car off the guy said that the problem was the coilpack for cylinder #1, not the fuel injector.

So...I'm thinking that the intermittent CEL light was probly caused by the dying of the coil pack, because when my fuel injector went in the summer, the CEL stayed on and the idle was always rough, not in and out like it is now.

Can a bad coilpack cause a misfire?

I just want to be sure that my fuel injector is alright and that I won't have to bring the car back in a week to get that done. In the meantime there's a GD on coilpacks which I'm planning on getting in on. Since my car's almost ten years old it could probly use a new set and would probly run like brand new, which it usually does anyway.

Thanks guys, hopefully this will be the end of repairs for a while.

A bad coilpack is usually the first cause of a misfire.

And save some money in the future and check the codes yourself, hang out here and read alot then you'll be on your way to DIY-ville.

Yeah check the coilpack first hopefully that is it because if not then you have to take off the intake manifold to get to the injector. I just did it and its not exactly fun but its not really hard either just finding the bolts. If you look in the how-to's there is a link somewhere for testing the coilpack. But for the injector its simple really just take a screwdriver or piece of vacuum hose and hold it to the good injectors and you will hear clicking and then hold it to number one which is the first under the manifold on the passenger side and it will either not be clicking or be really dull so try that out because it will only take a minute.

Check the injector by listening for ticking.

Swap the coil packs to see if the CEL changes banks.

Make sure you are not running down-and-dirty cheapo spark plugs.

Well, I got my car back from the shop yesterday afternoon. When I started the car up I still had a rough idle. I couldn't believe it still felt the same after they changed the coilpack. So I went back inside and talked to the guy. I told him that when I had the ECU scanned that the code P0301 came up, which is for a bad fuel injector, and that's what they should've changed to begin with. Then he brought me over to his computer and showed me the whole diagnostic flowchart that they go through to find out what's the problem and then reassured me that my fuel injectors are fine. So then what would still cause the rough idle while the car is warming up?

It definitely drives better, I only have rough idle while warming up now, after it's warm all accelerations are smooth.

And this morning, when I started my car up the engine was knocking for a couple minutes. The CEL didn't come on, but that's never happened to me before, so I have no idea what is still wrong or if there's a new problem that needs to be fixed, but it definitely isn't 100%.
