PCV Valve....should I buy it?

Well, I'm gonna order a laundry list of stuff for my car, and a I've heard the part PCV valve tossed around here a couple of times. It only costs about $8, is it worth buying and changing? What does it do, and how hard is it? Thanks for the info.

I just changed mine ... I was getting a consistent popping sound though and this turned out to be the culprit.

It's not worth changing unless yours is malfunctioning ... it's part of the "60k service" so they last a pretty long time I would guess

it's somewhat of a pain, you have to unbolt all the brackets ontop of the intake manifold and move some hoses just to get to it, and then yank of the 2" hose that is on the PCV valve and pray you can get it to flex enough to come off

some would say its easy, but mine was being a punk

Damn Tom it sounds like your PCV valve had something against you. Well I just cleaned mine up with brake parts cleaner. The reason they go bad over time is that carbon/oil builds up inside the valve overtime and eventually don't allow the valve to open (or to close, w/e the case is, it can't move). So i just pulled it out and stuck the spray needle inside the valve on both the in and out of it and sprayed until the valve inside moved freely (chake it and listen for it moving) and the fluid came out clear (instead of brownish-black like in the begining). Vuala, like new.

What the PCV valve does is that it recirculated the air that builds up inside the crankcase of the engine and vents it into the intake to be properly burnt. If it becomes clogged, you'll have crankcase vacuum related issues... what they are, i don't know(mechanics jump in), but I don't want to find out either lol.
It doesn't take more than 15 minutes from taking it out to it being back in your engine. Its cheap insurance.

its beyond me what some of these guys are talkinga bout. it took me like 3 minutes to do it in the dark. y ou just unbolt the bracket that holes the hoses in that area so you get enough flex, then just yank the house and the pcv shuld pop right out....3 minutes....5 if you're a turtle.

my pinky wasnt small enough to get near that thing without moving **** outta the way ...

I think it is supposed to be replaced like every 10k miles or so. It is really cheap and takes less than a minutes to change. I see no reason to not change it.

can intake cleaner do the job as well to clean out the PCV valve?

want to clean mine for better gas but dont want to buy new parts yet.

I think it was called carb choke something I bought at advanced auto parts to clean my intake when it gets dirty.

The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve is very important because it prevents the buildup of acid or water due to the condensation of the blow-by during compression. The acid and water can wear down and damage the crankshaft.

Damn, $8 for a PCV valve, is it made from super plastic and rubber? It costs $2-3 at most. Don't be stupid and use CARB cleaner on a maxima.
