How do you search this message board? Looking for rear brake pad How To.

Ok I know how dumb this sounds but I can not figure out how to search these message boards for something. Is there a button I'm missing, or a menu I've missed?

I'm looking for help with replacing my rear disk brakes and the link in the How To section for rear brakes doesn't work. I thought it would be the same as front brakes but they aren't - and I'm having problems. To top it off, my Haynes manual seems to miss the rear brakes entirely and instead goes into a chapter about replacing drum brakes??

Specifically the problem I'm having is I can't get the caliper off the disk - the caliper is attached to I believe the parking brake (which is now disengaged) but the assembly isn't giving me much room to free it from the disk. Anyone run into this and know the correct way of doing this?

We just talked about this in the past few days!

To remove your rear rotors, you need to remove the calipers and the torque members first. This is very similar to the procedure shown for the front brakes at http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/300. There is an additional bolt that needs to come off for the parking brake cable, though.

The caliper is attached to the torque member with two 14mm bolts. These bolts engage with the caliper sliding pins. There is another 14mm bolt that anchors the parking brake cable to the attachment point on the rear of the caliper. Remove all three of these bolts and your caliper can be taken off. If it is seized or sticky, the caliper may be hard to remove. Gently pound it off with a rubber mallet.

The torque member is attached to the hub assembly with two 17-mm bolts. Remove these bolts and the torque member can be taken off.

Your rotor floats on the lug studs. You will see there are two tapped holes on the rotor face near the lug holes. By far the easiest way to remove the rotor iis to get a 12mm bolt and screw it into one or both of these tapped holes. This will "jack" the rotor off the hub even if it is somewhat rusted on there.

Here is the older thread:

If you need instructions on bleeding your brakes, there are some in this thread:

Good luck!

Thanks for the help guys!

I ran into one additional problem with this which could have been avoided if I'd read the Haynes manual and actually read it, and not just made assumptions while following along. When you go to compress the piston back on the rear brakes you do not use a clamp - instead you use a pair of needle nose pliers to turn it back (just like a screw). For those with this manual refer to section 9, illistration 3.6m.

I read this and re-read this and it didn't even phase me - I was trying to compress it back in the way you do with the front brake piston. After a while though it finally dawned on me what the problem was and I was able to resolve it but only after a good hour wasted trying to troubleshoot it.

It's part of the parking brake mechanism. The idea is to keep the pads mechanically close to the rotor as the parts wear. So your parking brake is self-adjusting.
