BMW's are designed that way. there is no distinct advantage to relocating the battery.

I might be wrong but I think the FI people have to move the battery to the trunk to fit the piping or something for a turbo.

with the exception of the 313ti, I believe all BMW's are naturally aspirated

I see one advantage, you can run a long intake pipe right behind the headlight. That's why I did it. To relocate you have to get a large CABLE, 0 gauge or larger like 1/0 or 2/0, I used welding cable. Connect that to the positive cable in the engine bay, wrap it in electrical tape. Run it through the firewall, there is a hole plugged by a rubber gromet. Run it on the side of the car under the carpet, under the rear seat to the trunk, that's your positive wire. Find a GOOD ground and run it to the battery. Voila, you're done.

Dave Sz,
that is exactly what i was thinking, not to be wrong but you are just saying to connect it to the positive cable and then wrap it w/electrical tape. the reason i'm doing this is because i'm doing a turbo setup so i need to relocate my battery.
(also can your'll see my pic on the bottom of my sig.)

this would also benefit short rammers slightly... instead of running a whole new pipe behind the headlight... same as dave pretty much...

anyone else have the summit kit? or any type of kit? pics would be cool... im thinking of doing this before my system to aid things a bit...

lol, dave, do you have a box or something to mount your battery down in your trunk with? because i know you didnt have one in your engine bay...

clean... so the first one on the following page would be sufficient right?

http://www.racenet.net/elec/tay-bat-relocation.php

i guess im a little confused on this... the red wire runs to the engine bay to the starter... and the black wire runs to where? is that all thats needed?

Yeah, I got me a nice box to put the battery in, only reason I don't have a tie down is cause it didn't come with the car. The box with ste strap and all the mounting crap was $13, welding cable $30 for 25ft, and 4 2/0 loop connector things were $7 if any one wanted to know. Royal T I see no pic

with an optima, i wont need a box will i? the mount itself will be ok?

besides a box wouldn't be good for me since i want to run hook up my system right, and the box only has two holes for the two cables... id have to leave the lid off?

whole point is weight distribution

BMWs have it in the back to get their awesome 50/50 weight distribution... out Maximas with 90/10 could use a bit of that too sometimes I think its like 60/40 or 63/37 for us

My box has 4 holes. The maxima weight distribution is something like 70/30 I've read.

Keep the weight over your front tires where the power is hits the road unless the room is absolutely needed.

1999 Maxima weight distro:

62% front/38% rear – 5-Speed
63% front/37% rear - Automatic

Based on the 5-speed curb weight (3,014lbs) and a 40lb battery, relocating it to the trunk would make the distribution 60.7% front and 39.3% rear, so that's definitely an improvement but probably not very noticeable.

On any car, 50/50 is best for handling. On a FWD car, 100/0 would be best for acceleration, but that's impossible. On a RWD car, having the batter in the trunk helps offset the weight of a front-mounted engine. I was thinking about relocating my battery but on a FWD it seems pointless if you're only doing it for weight distribution reasons. Also I don't need a huge empty spot in my engine bay.

Take out the battery and battery tray
Run a 2 gauge wire through the car into the trunk.
Run a ground wire
And hook up the positive 2 gauge back to original positive that was hooked to the battery when it was in the engine bay.
