I can say this because I'm a certified technician. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Manually shifting your automatic but it's only allowed by people who know how to shift properly. If your a wannabe racer and shifting your auto like crazy which I've seen people do. Going up the gears is not a prob but it's when your down shifting like when your at 70mph and down shift to 2nd and so on. So you can get that manual feel and sound eeerrrrrrrrrrrrhmmmmm pop pop pop FaRt Can
that's where all the damage occures. The heat build up is tremendous in an Auto DO NOT DO THIS NO MATTER HOW COOL IT SOUNDS WHEN DOWN SHIFTING I REPEAT DO NOT DO THIS[/ An Auto Tranny can not take that kind of abuse. If you like Manually Shifting get a Tranny cooler just to be on the safe side thats what I have.
Fastest NA AUTO Here I Come

OK THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS. FOR THE MILLIONTH DAMN TIME. There is a computer inside our transmission I believe it is called the TCM. The car DOES NOT SHIFT unless the TCM tells it, so whether you manually shift or shift automatically it makes no difference it only allows you to run the gear a little longer, and 9 times out of 10 at WOT I've noticed that the car DOES shift at 6500RPM. Shift from 2 to D you'll notice that the car takes 1-2 seconds before it shifts, sometimes it will shift instantaneously that is the TCM doing it's job. I've been manually shifting for a while, I have not noticed any problems, so you guys need to stop with these rumors that make absolutely no sense. BTW what does a crank position sensor have to do with manually shifting... addressing the previous poster.

Bahhahhhahhhahha, yea i know it sounds like a ricer thing to do, But you can hold gears longer, and shift into much more hp.
its like tiptonic, you know all the new cars.... same exact thing. guess todays lexus' hell, i think 6th gen max's/g35's have tiptronic... they all tacky?
The TCM is not inside the tranny. It is inside the car behind the head unit. Manually downshifting is not bad. I've been doing it for over a year. The car is fine. You can be at 100MPH and throw it in first. Nothing bad will happen. The TCM will think, "This driver is a dumb@ss I better not do what he is telling me." The result is that it downshifts to third. You guys have good points about heat. But if the torque converter and engine are at the same RPM then no excess heat is created. Removing the DR makes the tranny/engine spend less time in this relationship.

This is my first automatic after driving (3) 5-Speeds. After 8 months, I still rest my hand on the shifter. Every once in a while I will hold it in 1st or 2nd gear, that's about it. Auto's scare me.
