Better to Stick with One Brand of Fuel?
Better to Stick with One Brand of Fuel?
There's always this rumor going around that it's better to stick with one type of gas, whatever it may be, rather than mixing them up. I suppose this makes sense. Anybody have anything proven to say on the subject?
There's a few methods to this madness, and they all revolve around the idea that not all gas is the same. Indeed, it is not. For example, BP used to have an ad campaign about how their gas "prevents fuel line freeze-up." BP gas DOES prevent it, but that's because silicon is added to the mix. I avoid it simply because I don't want silicon in my tank. I know nothing about whether it can damage your car. Also, some gas stations just have crappy gas. One time I put Speedway gas in my old turbo DSM, and the difference (perhaps because its a boosted car) was crazy - hesitation, poorer acceleration, and I was getting stuck 3psi short of what I had set. With Shell or Chevron gas, no problems whatsoever. It was weird, and the only conclusion to draw is that Speedway gas sucks. But what sucks in car A might be awesome in car B, so what gas you use should simply be a matter of preference. If you've never had a problem at Sunoco or wherever, I don't see a reason to stop using it.
There's other factors that vary by state: Ohio, for example, executes no testing on gas to ensure it's quality (meaning that 93 octane you're paying for isn't guaranteed to actually have a rating of 93 or higher), but most states DO require it.
For the most part, all gas IS essentially the same. The best advice concerning gas is simple: if the gas tanker is at the station, don't fill up there. The storage tankers under these stations can be 20, 30, 40 years old. Sediment inevitably builds up. Refilling them kicks up all that sediment, increasingly the likelihood that it can get spit into YOUR tank.

BP Amoco Ultimate & Shell V-Power 93 both seem to work fine im my Max.
Strangely whenever I put Mobil 93, somehow it triggers the SES light for a week or so, then shuts off on its own, but the car seems to drive fine. Has anyone experienced something similar to this w/ Mobil or any other brand of gas?

Actually, I should be happy about that cuz the car was a POS and now I got a max!

Just stick to name brand gas...
You should be fine, stay away from mom and pop places. Or the lil generic brand named places that indians or asians own. I have heard alota **** bout those places, and can vouch for it all with my mileage on a full tank compared to that of chevron....

That's cause v-power has a ****load of additives? I'm not sure wheter that's good or not. Think about it though, is your car gonna feel faster with one dose of octane booster like normal gasoline or 5 doses like shell. Anyway, I filled up at a marathon station for the first time last week and the car feels as good as ever.
VSPEC, please edit your sig before I report it.

Right on. I'm trying Mobil 93 now since I get practically everything else Mobil. We'll see how it goes.
How about all those 'Fuel system cleaners' and 'injector cleaners'? Any good?
Like Prestone, STP, Gumout, etc..
