Front & Rear Disc brakes change

Ok guys, i just did my 1st job on my new car. I have a 1995 GLE w/abs. I followed the directions from motorvate and the Haynes manual [which i really didn't need because of motorvate]. The instructions were dead on. Took me 4 hrs and a whole hour on the drivers rear because the the little slide piston like thing was rusted in place, that was a biotch but after sprayin with wd-40 and channel locks i got it to break loose and all went easy after that. No more squealing and the brakes stop on a dime. Funny thing i found was that whoever changed the brakes last didn't have the correct rear pads for the car SO THEY CUT THEM TO FIT! . Just wanted to say thanx to these boards for the stickies and articles that i found on "how to replace your brakes" without these boards i probably would have never even attempted it, even though they wound up being very easy. Thanx maxima.org!

I agree, better to read a success story rather than a " how do you do this........." thread.

Hopefully others will follow your lead.

I hope your brake job fails........

just kidding. Congrats on a job well done. I've owned mine now for 6 years, and still haven't tackled the brakes yet....

Well seems that something is messed up. After about a week the sqealling came back. It happens whenever i am lightly pressing on the brakes. If i press hard the sqeal goes away, but it is really startin to annoy me. Now to my question. The fronts didn't have any shims and the rears were in pretty bad shape. But i had the wheels apart and no other transportation to the car parts store to buy a new kit, so i put the old ones on the rear and didn't put any on the front. Will this make them squeal like crazy when applying slight pressure? I am thinking this is the cause but want to pick your brains before i pull off all my wheels and replace the shims.

putting the old shims on will not cause a problem unless they are pretty beat up. The fronts are supposed to have shims on them which could cause a squealing noise if not put on or not put on properly. You might just want to get new shims for all of the brakes, or just for the fronts and make sure you use some kind of brake lube and get all of the caliper-to-pad contact points. I used this 3M grease at work for brakes and it worked pretty well. It's in a small can with a brush and is a white/clear grease.

Yes the rears were pretty bad and i remember saying to myself "replace them" but i didn't want to put everything back together again to go to the store. And i did put a bunch of anti-squeak stuff on. Now i will have to do just that. Damn, that's what i get for being lazy!

I had run into a similar problem with my honda once so this time with my max I took no chances and got the brake hardware kit from autozone since I was going to do my front pads/rotors on thanksgiving day.
