Engine speed

What should the engine speed of a 98 5 spd be at around 80mph? My car is at around 3500rpm when i am driving 80 and that seems kinda high compared to alot of other cars when going 80( i usually see cars at around 2500-3000rpm when going 80mph) . Why is the RPM so high when only going 80? Is the MAX 5 spd just like that? Also i hear alot of people talking about how the VQ's are very quiet and that makes it hard to hear the engine...my engine isn't quiet at all, but has a healthy hummm to it when i push it. Is it just my car or does anyone else on this board have the same issues?

With my Infinity 97 i30, I run at around 2500 RPM at 80. It's an automatic, and that's with OD on (4th gear). 3rd gear (OD off) will do around 3500. Without having ever driven a Maxima 5spd, that does seem high...

You're in 5th gear, right?

Our 5 spd.'s are just geared in that fashion. Very short, but powerful 5th gear. If you think our cars arent quiet at 3,000 rpm's, try driving a 4-banger at a sustained 3,000 rpm's.

I was going to say, when people say our engines are quiet I think they are compairing the 'quiet' of the V6 to the 'quiet' of the I4 (the pre-2000 standard in Camry and Accords).

Does running at 3500rpm at 80mph consume a substantial amount of gas? I noticed that automatics and 5 spd maxima's have about the same gas mileage on the highway , just the 5 spd gets 1 less mile per gallon. Considering the automatic runs at around 2500rpms at 80mph v.s 3500rpms for the 5 speed. Does anyone know exactly what the engine speed should be at different speeds?

By the way our 5spd's or at least mine isnt very quiet compared to other V6's like the accord V6. When i leave my car in neutral and rev the engine it is very quiet, but When im driving at highways speeds i think the transmission makes most of the noise. Is anyone elses MAX like this?
