Newbie Getting a Maxima

Hi all,

I'm trying to get this '97 SE with 5 speed, it seems to be pretty loaded (it has leather interior with seat heaters). The car looks mint from the pictures, regardless its very high mileage (113k).

So, I wonder what I should watch out on a Maxima with this kind of mileage or if there is a FAQ somewhere that I have missed. I'm familiar with some cars and I have been car enthusiast all my life, so a (new to me) car does not intimidate me. I just need to learn the aspects.

Thanks in advance for your time

Check the faqs, but 113 isn't really high with a maxima. Mine has 116 runs like new. 200+ is not unheard of.

i bought my 97 se 5-speed with 138k on it, and it runs awesomely... if thats a word, in any case, great car, dont worry about the miles as long as the previous owner maintained it well

113K... that just finished braking in :P lol j/p..

anyways thats nothing, I have 116K and have had NO major problems other than the 95 timing chain rattle that I fixed by replacing the tensionor..

My starter went out.. And I changed my radiator.. thats about it, rest is basic maintance things and well.. starter should be a maintanence item, it never fails to go out on you on any car.

Mileage is not that high, if the price is right, get it. Mine has 105m and it pulls like its new. Also, I had no problems in 11 months that I owned it, just regular maintance and thats it.

Yah there are a million stickies you can read.. In the 4th gen section under FAQS, the fluids and lubricants, the general forums.

Ill give you a tip.. If you read those then we will be less likely to murder you and hang your remains by the front door.

Thanks for becoming an orger.

Thanks all.

As far as fluids and lubricants, I'm already prepared for that. What I was mainly looking for is the things that I should check on a car with such mileage. You guys know what needs to be replaced and whatnots at that mileage. I guess with a timing chain, there is no worry about it breaking. Maybe there are common rust spots ?

I'm looking forward to getting this car, from some of the threads I read, the car should be pretty peppy and fun to drive. Good for keeping me getting bored while my beast is hibernating for winter

So, what do you guys think is a good price for such a vehicle ? The seller is willing to let it go for $5k, I want to try to get it down to $4k. Reasonable ? A steal ? Too much ? KBB indicates that $3.9k is trade-in price. Are the prices on 4G lower than book value ?

Thanks again.

Try to get it for $4K; if he goes that low try to go lower.

Well, I think it's a little unethical if I offered him $4k and he agreed to that, then I lowered the offer again. Should I start with something lower then ? $3.5k ? Thanks.

Well, just found out through Carfax that it was involved in an accident (police report as the proof) once. I don't think there is anyway in telling how bad it was especially if the fix is good enough to cover the structural damage.

Darn it, and I was just getting excited
