y pipe and exhaust question

i just wanted to know .....what is the biggest size exhaust i could fit under my 96 max i was thinkin 3.5inches is this possible?? and for the y pipe one of my idiot friends told me that the two pipes that come to a point off the headers should be about 1.5 to 1 3/4 inches and come together to form a 3 - 3.5 inchpipe to run directly into my cat back (3 - 3.5 inches) this kind of made sense but i wanted to check in with the oFfIcIaLs @ the oRg.... couldnt you get a catlyic converter to make the pipe "bigger" im a newbie as u could probably see any info whould be appreciated thanks

a catalytic converter will do nothing but give you about 1-2 hp and make your exhaust sound different for the worst to me... your stock system is 2.25... 2.5 is good for NA cars... 3.0 is recommended for FI... anything more is overkill IMHO...

dont always listen to your friends...

someone correct me if im worng, but wont any pipe larger than 2.5 inches cause you to loose power if you are not boosted? and even if you are boosted you only want 3 inches. stock is 2.25 inches, getting anything larger than 2.5 is completely useless.

unless you want to be a ricer, got get some 5' PVC Piping and slap it on your car, or stick with 2-2.5" piping under your car for performace. anything over 2.5" you'll need boost. or else you'll loose hp

well i got my GReddy off www.popupracing.com it cam to a lil over 500 shipped, yes, i plan on adding a y-pipe and high flow catalytic converter. the GReddy fit perfectly and i had no problem putting it in (took me about half an hour on a lift in my autos class) it's not as loud as u think because the muffler itself is oval in shape, so it doesnt sound "ricey" at all
