98 Max AT stalls when put in gear! Pls Help
Alright, I just bought a 98 SE with an auto tranny. Sometimes when you put it into gear (usually when it's cold) it with just go clunk and stall. Even if you try to save it with some throttle, it will just lurch a little and stall. The previous owner told me it's been happening ever since the shift lockout broke. (you can move the shifter without the key in the ignition or foot on the brake) Could this have anything to do with a safety feature or the antitheft system? It almost seems like the tranny or torque converter is locked because the car lurches forward a little, but even if I rev the **** out of it and drop in in gear it stalls immediatly. It does this every few days and is getting to be a pain so any help would be appreciated. Has this happened to anyone else?
PS. the idle is fine and I don't have any codes

Sounds, like a tranny/electronic issue. Maybe the tranny is throwing out codes but that will not show in the ECU diag mode. Take it to a tranny shop and have them hook up a scanner to it. Maybe that will tell you something.
BTW, how in the world did he break the lockout device?

Thats horribly dangerous, imagine doing that at like 70 mph on accident, or like having some kid push it on accident/book hit it... not good

No, I have to push the button, but I don't need to have the key in the ignition or step on the brake (don't know if you need to step on the brake in this model anyway, but I know the key should be in the ignition to shift)
