It would turn over and over and over when I tried to start it. Would not catch. It was like no fuel was getting to the engine. Left it overnight in the sams club parking lot. Took parents van to Abraham Nissan (elyria, Oh) they said it was not likely the fuel pump, but the crank position sensor (the one by the transmission). Bought one of those ($100) and swapped it in the Sams club parking lot. Still would not start. Gave up and had it towed to Nissan ($50). Nissan calls me the next day and says it was a "security system lockout" and that they had to reprogram the security system and the key ($70). Total of $220 on the credit card baby!!

I asked the technician (mechanic) if this problem would come up on an OBDII scanner. He said probably, but you would need "a Nissan Computer" to reset everything .

I'm concerned that this might happen again. And if so there has to be a way to reset it on your own.

Also I have no idea what I did to cause this.

 

It seems to happen speratically to us 99 owners for no aparent reason.

This seems like something we should be able to take care of on our own.

This is a common problem with the 99's. There is nothing we can do as owners to reset the system. Dealer repair only. Nissan even has issued a TSB on this recurring problem.

What if I was to do something like pull the fuse for the security system?

How often can I expect to be paying for a $50 tow, and $70 to flash the ECU, plus downtime (which is the most expensive part of any breakdown). There has to be something we can do.

 

Does anyone know if an ECU reset would clear this? There has to be something we can do.
