How do you know if you timing chain needs adjustment?

I was just curious how you know if your timing chain needs adjustment. the reason why i ask is i notice a funny noice (very light tapping i guess u would describe it as) coming from that area and my friend said he thought that it might be the reason.

Timing chains are supposed to last the life of the engine with no maintenance or repairs needed. Could it maybe be your valves tapping? Timing chains usually make a rattling noise.
