K&N Air Filter DAMAGE!!!
Hey guys, wondering if any of you had to ever replace a MAF meter. How long should this MAF meter last. Nissan says I need a new one because I use a K&N panel filter. The guy at Nissan said that it was allowing dirt through and it damaged the MAF meter. Has anyone ever heard of this????

no
MAF should last lifetime of the car... i find it very hard to believe that a panel filter could kill the MAF. The connector was probably loose and they pushed it back in for you lol.
well, if there's something wrong with the MAF, usually the car goes into "safe-mode" and doesnt allow you to rev any more than 2k RPM.. was this the symptom before you took it in?

I believe it. Tons of threads about MAF damage usually due to over oiling the filter and debris killing the MAF. Heck, I destroyed O2 sensors when my CAI filter got all clogged up and ran the car rich for months.

Not likely, Ive used K&N filters for years in diiferent vehicles and have never seen a K&N filter over oiled out of the box. If anything, their very lightly oiled.

i did not even know that k&n's came oiled. I am sure that it was over oiled as well. And maybe the filter got dirty and needed a recharge, but never got one. The filter propeally used shouyld never of done anything to the MAF. The only way filter could of causes something is by neglact and wrong use.

Mine lasted 240K miles. Recently replaced with junkyard one....$75.
I swore it broke one day after I took a speed bump too fast. The MAF would rattle when you shook it, and the new/junkyard one wouldn't.
Anyway, had the 2K RPM symptom, and stalling.

The MAF is totally repairable. I botched mine up when putting my CAI in, I unscrewed it instead of unclipping the wiring harness. All you have to do is make sure the 3 metal prongs make contact with the sensors inside the MAF, and it should work fine. Now, if one of the prongs are broken, which sounds like what happened to izzydig, then youll probably have to replace it.

Some autoparts stores have em. Mine got replaced at 97K and I hadn't installed my CAI yet. Nissan wanted something like $500 and a friend of mine got it for $102, a hell of a difference. Stealership. There are a few on Ebay right now cause I thought about getting a spare. Check around.

Use some Electronic (make sure it is safe for electronic circuitry) cleaner. If this doesn't help then get a new or used one from here or from a junkyard. I would not spend over $75-100. Once again you can get on for $50 easy. I just sold one actually. Dealership will charge you $300-500. Be careful with them and don't drop them. K&Ns should not do that if not over oiled. They are either lying to scare you or don't know what they are talking about.

Right after I replaced it, I looked at the "broken" one. I DID notice what you've said. Looks like I would need to clean and push those contacts in (or somehow solder), to make better contact with the inner 3 contacts (those 3 prongs). The 3 prongs look like they've completely separated and oxidized (light coat of white powder). It seems like I have a spare now. :P
I tried to pry the black cover off, but I didn't have any success without possibly breaking it. Its sealed with this RTV type sealant. I dunno if I'd break it if I did that, but I figure Nissan got it put together somehow, so I dunno. Maybe I'll finally just pop that black cover open finally, and see how these things are serviceable.

How about AMSOIL filter?
I have been using AMSOIL product for the past 3 years and I am really happy with it. They make air filters also. The Air filters have the same air flow as K&N but they filter the air way better. I looked at the tests of the K&N and Amsoil 2 stage filter. K&N's filtrations is really bad. It's all about high air flow in there.
