Will all oil drain out if I remove oil filter?

I'm running mobil1 synthetic and am going to do the oil for 15,000 miles with an oil filter swap at 7500 miles. Do I need to drain out all the oil before I remove the oil filter or can I just replace the oil filter without draining and just top off the lost oil? If just a little will drain out, how much? I'm hoping it's less than a quart.

When you take off the oil filter, you'll lose about 1 quart of oil along with it. You can then top off your Mobil1 with any type of oil.

Mobil1 is a synthetic oil....YOU CANNOT mix sythetic with normal oil.

Something new "15,000 miles", wow!

I'm changing my oil every 5,000 miles with synthetic oil. I will consider that option on my next oil change. Maybe 10,000 miles before I go ahead with 15,000 miles.

Any oil can be mixed, what do you think synthetic blends are?

That is new news to me, I can remember when Mobil 1 1st came out and you weren't suppose to mix it with other oils. I have been out of the car scene for quite some so either things have changed or i'm losing mt mind...either way sorry for the mis-information.

Btw Synthetic is a "man-made" oil , regular oil is from crude so there is a difference between the 2...that i know.

Did you read the question?

He's doing it the other way around...changing the filter without changing the oil

I don't think you'll lose quite a quart, but you should have some kind of pan ready. Measure it when you're done and let us know, but I'm guessing you'll lose less than 1/2 quart.

synthetic oil is manufacturer recommended to run for a lot more than 3k.. like 8kish I think, suggested you change the filter halfway..

dumping it at 3 is wasting your money..

*edit* and to the original poster, pls let us know how much you lose, i'd be interested to know.. thanks

you will lose less than 1/2 a quart. I did this attempting to take some oil out of the motor to get it to the full mark. I took my blower off for rebuild and did not need the extra oil that I always put in to accomidate for blower and oil lines.

I guess a lot of people in here haven't heard of Amsoil or their suggestion to change it every 15,000.

our filter size only holds a quarter of a quart of oil. the rest of the oil that come out when you take the filter off is all the oil thats still up in the engine. why dont u just change both every 3-5K like normal. i personally dont care about $ when it saves life on my engine. -Ryan

Because it's a waste of money. You've been trained to think it's "normal" when really almost all oil can go more than that.

I'm all for spending money if it's going to save life on my engine but that doesn't mean I'm going to burn money when there's no gain.

All you guys that use synthetic and change the oil every 3,000 miles. You guys must change your tires when they are only 1/2 worn out too right????

ok i shouldnt have said normal then, yes its a gimmick i dont follow that i just wait til i dont like the color of my oil anymore before changing it. last time waited 10K i was just saying in genral, so no i havent been trained to think that. its pretty obvious that if youre oils not looking rough you dont need to change it.

I use sythetic and change it 3-4500 miles. I change my tires when they are baby *** bald! Im talking dry road/poor traction bald. Little bit of rain hydroplane bald. When you are running extra power more heat is created which breaks down the oil making it a good idea to change oil more often. Yes I have heard of carrott juice or amsoil. Never tried it but I always hear good things. I like my mobil 1. $20 for 5 qts is a good deal to me.

I do about 1,000 miles in 3 months and here and I thought I might be irresponsible for changing my filter every 3 months and my oil every 3,000. On Mobil 1 synthetic, btw.

I can't believe the corners people cut are getting bigger by the week.

You know the oil industry isn't doing well when 99% of your customers are going over on their change.

Saying the word stupidest is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I change my oil every 10,000 miles and I change my filter every 5,000. 150,000 miles later, no problems.

Now all the long interval haters can read some real world test results.

Mobil 1 currently enjoys the distinction of being the only readily available true PAO synthetic motor oil. You can get the stuff at Wal-Mart for Pete's sake! Perhaps because of its wide availability and comparatively low price, we entered this test with both hope and skepticism: hope that it would do well and vindicate millions of M1 users, and skepticism that it would pull it off. We were expecting it to look pretty beat up by 8,000 miles or so; to say we missed the mark would be polite understatement. Mobil 1 really delivered: 18,000 miles later, it was showing its age but was still hard at work protecting the engine.

(#19) ..

don't worry, nobody bothered to read it when I posted it, i'm sure they'll keep that trend up and keep changing at 3k, or going by color to determine how good it is..

being that you're new.. i'll let you in on a hint.. you might want to read thru some of the links provided in a thread before commenting.. for example, above yours, in post number 19 and a few posts below yours.. a whole page devoted to breaking up the myth you are propogating.. (credit to mzmtg).. although they did do scientific type testing, which i'm sure is less reliable than the "that's how I do it" method..

I don't want scientific theory, what would convince me is some real-world proof. An engine (without rebuild) with 300k, maybe 250k miles with 15k mile oil changes. Real-world, published, proof.

Anyone can throw up something on the internet.
