Local garages and pep boys are just two places that you can get your inspection LEGALLY...

Take it to a private inspection station. I get my Bronco inspected everytime that way and the state stations won't even look at it because it is lifted. As long as your car is safe and can pass Emissions you'll be OK. No way around the Emission thing.
The inspection is for my Grand Cherokee. The check engine light is on due to transmission code. Took it to one place and was quoted around $2000 to repair for a totally rebuilt transmission. The light has been on for the last 15 months and it's been running fine, so I really don't want to rebuild the tranny and spend that much just so I can pass inspection.
If I take it through the free state inspection just to take it in to fail, I can take it to any "state approved" facility on their list that is certified for emissions repair. However, none of the local small reasonably priced shops that happen to be on that list, will touch transmissions and of course the transmission shops (none on the list anyway) just want to replace and rebuild transmissions.
Funny thing is, according to the paperwork they give you when you fail, is that I can purchase parts myself and repair it myself and if my receipts for parts are $450 or greater and I still have the same issue, I can get a waiver, I'd be good for another 2 years. I was thinking of ordering and cancelling an order for transmission solenoids, which is big $$ and having an invoice showing I spent over $450 and claim that I installed the part myself and still have the same problem.
So regardless of how I get it, I still need to have a current inspection sticker on the damn thing!
Sorry for posting this in this forum, should have been in the northeast section.
