Suspension

So my mechanic says the Maxima I just bought needs shocks and struts. I know most people on this site are big supporters of Tokico Illuminas with Eibach springs. Knowing that you generally get what you pay for, are there cheaper alternatives that offer a good level of performance for the dollar?

Also, how can I tell if I'm able to use my stock springs with new shocks? For instance if I were to get the Illuminas, would it be a total bad idea to use the stock springs?

Thanks.

It wouldnt be a bad idea to use stock struts and Illuminas.. but you wouldnt really need them. If your going to stay with stock struts, get KYB GR2's, theyre a tad stiffer than stock. If your going to lower the car with springs... remember once you go lower it affects your ride.

I see. I'm not into racing at all, just want a comfortable ride when I'm driving around on weekends or to work during the week. Right now, I feel like every bump I hit is really felt.

How does lowering affect my ride? I realize that with a lower center of gravity that there will be less body roll in turns but how else is the ride affected?

So for my purposes, you think the KYB GR2's are my best bet with stock springs?

Thanks.

You sound like a good candidate for the GR2s+stock springs.

Lowering is a trade-off. You don't have as much suspension travel in a lowered car so you must have stiffer springs. If you want comfort and are happy with the looks of the car at the current height then just keep your existing springs and do the shocks. You'll be fine.

I second KYB GR2s and stock springs. The shocks will run you about $250 shipped.

Even better! These shocks are designed as an OEM replacement and every mechanic I have spoken to says they are excellent products.

But if you do want your Max to look better. Get springs too. Check out my homepage for pics of my Progress/GR-2 combo...
