Advice to buyer of 97 GXE

Hello,

I have always wanted a Maxima, and finally my wish may be coming true, but I need some help. I've searched all over the Net and tried on these boards (search feature is for donors only i think), but i havent found much at all re: what to watch out for when buying specifically a 4th gen Max.

The car i'm interested in is a 1997 GXE with 115K miles / 185K km. What are some major items that should have been taken care of before and what may be creeping up in the next 6 - 12 months.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

regards,

Farooq
future Max owner

p.s. I'm paying $6250 CDN, or U$5000. Its in excellent shape with only 2 - 3 inches of the front hood edge rusting.

97's are pretty solid. Everything I've done is routine maintenance or something that is expected to wear out after 8 years and 130k. (cv boots, clutch, battery). Nothing major.

I believe there was an issue with either the alternator or the starter (can't remember which) that had a recall...

Good advice above^. Check CV joints, brake pads, front struts, front suspension parts (tie rod ends, ball joints). These are all normal wear items on a car with that many miles. If it is an Auto make sure the trans. is working good. A Maxima is a very good car. I have a 97 SE auto with 119,000 miles. I am very happy with it but I am having some front end issues right now (bad tie rod ends/struts).

The recall was on the alternator and mine lasted 99K miles, but not one mile more.

Thank you! That makes me so happy. The guy *seems* very meticulous in caring for the car. BTW, its a 5 speed.
Wow! I"m so glad to hear there are no issues. I've been driving a 95 530i, and if anyone ever posts the qstn i did, the list is sooooooooooo long. Welcome to Japanese cars eh?
I'm going to have a full inspection done, by an AAA approved garage (well, the CAA, us Cdns), dont trust the Nissan or any dealership too much.

Thanks again!

Having it checked out before you buy is a great idea. It sounds like you know what your doing

Good luck with your new car,

Check the alternator and coil packs.

Check for free play in the driver's side axle. 97s sometimes have carrier bearings that are susceptible to early failure.
