CV Shaft Retaining Clip Problems

I am trying to replace my CV boot and ran into a problem. I am trying to reassemble the axle but I can't get the axle back into the CV joint. The CV shaft retaining clip will not slip inside the CV joint. I have tried everything I can think of but can't get it to go. Anyone have any tips?

did you get new clips or are you using the old ones?

You'll probably need a 2x4 piece of wood and hit it really hard with a hammer

Well, you may have just solved my problem. It came with 5 new clips but I was trying to use the old one. Why did it come with 5 (all different) clips?

After looking a little closer, only 2 of the clips will even go on my axle. Of those 2, only 1 provides any resistance going on and it is giving me just as much trouble as the one that came off. I am trying to use a 2x4 but its hard to stabilize the axle against something solid so that I can hammer on it.

Some people were able to push the axle back in by hitting the other end with a rubber malet. I was able to do it using this method, but when I tried again after a couple of months, last inch or so never went in.

BTW don't think it will be OK to drive for just a little while without a fully seated axle. I did this and ended up towing my car

it really shouldn't be that hard. I've replaced several axles for my car and other cars, and never had any problems similar to yours. Make sure that everything is aligned properly.
Try to pull the axle our a but and then push it in really hard

I had the same problem when I accidently pulled the axle out while replacing the struts (don't ask)... It added 2 hours to my strut replacement.

Anyway, I was able to get it back in by clipping about half an inch off the retaining clip and bending it ever-so-slightly. there's still plenty to keep it secure but it went in much easier. I think it initially got a little bent when it was yanked out of the cv joint.

The clip should be inside the CV and you push the axle into it...by the way your post reads, it sounds like you have the clip on the shaft.

The various clips are used if you would disassemble the ENTIRE axle assembly...since you are only replacing a boot, you need only one.

Good luck,
JB
