CALI vs. FED Spec Differences.

Was goin thru some of the FAQ's today and saw how to find out if your car is Cali vs. Fed spec. I popped the hood and found out that I'm Cali, even though I'm a 1998!!

Don't Cali spec maximas have more precats than fed spec maximas? If so, am I slower than Fed spec Maximas? Will a y-pipe negate these extra precats? Thanks.

Yeah cali spec max's have more pollution reducing stuff. Pretty much makes the car slower. If you have an automatic then you have one the slowest maxima's made.

the whole exhaust? What if I were to replace JUST the y-pipe? would i be the same as a Fed spec Maxima with a y-pipe?

No it wouldn't be the same because the Cali spec has precats built into the header. The after market y-pipe only take out one of the pre cats.

So, it goes like this for the following STOCK maximas:

CALI SPEC:
pre-cats in headers: ??
pre-cats in y-pipe: ??

FED SPEC:
prec-cats in headers: ??
pre-cats in y-pipe: ??

I'm still a lil shady on this stuff. Thanks!!

CALI SPEC:
pre-cats in headers: 1 - on left side (front) of engine
pre-cats in y-pipe: 1 - on right side (rear) of engine
main cat: 1

FED SPEC:
pre-cats in headers: 0
pre-cats in y-pipe: 2
main cat: 1

I have a write-up of my Cali-Fed conversion at http://www.desertpearlmax2.homestead.com/Fed_YPipe.html. I think it will contain most of the information you are looking for.

WOW. Thank you SO much. That was a great read! I now know that I shouldn't worry about the Cali spec THAT much. That link should be posted in the FAQ's btw....

Read the post date before you post...I would doubt that you will get a response from the OP.

Only 99 Cali spec's have the extra precat in the front exhaust manifold. It can be deleted by swapping out a fed spec front exhaust manifold from a 95-99 Fed spec maxima/i30.

Being Cali-spec didn't make your Maxima slow. As for MEVI or 00vi, search and come to your own conclusions. Each has their own benefits.

IIRC FED SPEC/CALI SPEC only makes a difference when your a 99, if your a 98, 97 , 96 or 95 it doesn't make a difference
