i think my axle just fell off

as you all know i am the kid that effed up my fron wheel when a i drifted into the curb in the snow. after getting it fixed it was still messed up and still herd a clanking noise when the wheel turned. i was going to get it fixed tomorrow but it didnt make it.

on the way home the wheel pulled all the way to the right and it sounded like somthing was dragging, everytime i gave it a little gas i would hear this LOUD azz yelling noise. i pulled over and when i was idleing i herd somthing spining ( i think the drive shaft) rubbing against somthing. the car does not drive when it is in gear and nothing is engaging the wheels to spin. (aka. it doesnt move) I have no clue what to do, my car is on some random road right now.

i think i have the worst luck. i have no money left to pay for my car to get fixed, i spent every penny buying the car and every penny to get it fixed after the accident with the curb. my dad told me he is going to make me sell my car this week and will not allow me to put in a penny more for repairs.

my max is dead

i am dead.....

hey isnt cranking noise when ur wheel is turned means u got bad shock on that side? if its the axle or that one shock it shouldnt be too expensive to replace... hell i would do it myself... it cost me 60 dollars to swap an axle

by the way, i believe if u want some decent money for the car, u need to fix the obvious problems in it. anyways, good luck, ur health is the most important thing, not the car.

perhaps the axle is damaged but they didnt notice it, unless it leaks u cant detect it unless u drive the car. same goes for the shock (almost). just ask them to test drive the car.

tell them that its their fault and they have to fix it. since you paid money for them to fix whatever was wrong, they should have inspected the car. that sucks man. the max is a good car. try talking to your dad. im sure he'll understand.

passengers side axle will not fall out. the drivers side however can be a pain to insert fully into the tranny and can work its way out. one axle not in the tranny will result in the speedo working but the car wont move.

Get under there and look at it. JSutter is right by saying that the passenger side axle cannot fall out of the tranny, though if you snappedn one of the joints, it can fall down. It sounds as though you snapped the outer-joint on the axle; the car doesn't move, and when you hit the gas it spins the broken shaft around.

Only way to fix it (if this is the case) is to replace the axle. Have it towed somewhere, cuz you're not gonna be fixing this on the road. If you get it home (or somewhere else you can work on it), replacing the axle is no big deal for an average mechanic.

Did you end up fixing this yourself, or did you get it done by the mechanic that you originally took it to when you first slid into the curb? If it is true what they are saying, especially JSutter, the mechanic should be held accountable. Unless it can be proven that this was driver error (I'm not taking a shot at you), or something unrelated to the repair, he should have to fix it. Good Luck.

thanks for all the input. i have decided i cannot afford towing cuz its 75 to put in on the lift and 5 bucks per mile, so that would cost me 140 to tow it where i need it. i luckly pulled over about 1000 ft from a exxon station. i called they guy there and he said he can replace the axle within a day or so for about 180 bucks. ( i kno its expensive) but i have no other choice. i hope i dont kill myslef pushing the car across a main road. lol

well mainly i hope the axle does the trick beacuase my dad said this is the last repair i can do. he thinks becuase it has 156,000 miles on it that it is ****. i told him max''s last till like 250,000, but he wont listen....

oh yea and it didnt fall out cuz i looked under the car but it definatly snapped and it hitting somthing up in there

the lesson i learned is
1. dont *** around in the snow
2. dont drive if you hear a serious noise or somthing bad.
3. have "thick skin" and dont let your car get to you becuase everything will be ok in the end...

be carfull out there, im off on another adventure across woodbury road now prolly to deal with another ***** gas station mechanic..

What happened to your axel isn't all that uncommon. The outer joint is held on with a snap ring. If the snap ring got damaged from the impact of the curb then the outer joint can fall apart. The splind shaft that snaps into the center of the constant velosity joint can back off and become disengauged from the joint. The axel will spin within the boot and your car goes nowhere. I've actually had C.V. joints fall apart when the strut was taken out. You can put it back together, but it's a real messy job and requires new boot clips.

both my 5 spd axles did that! one was put back together in no time by feel; the other i had to open the boot and reassemble..... good learning experiance.
