Cali-spec '96 SE?

Well, I was under my hood today, and I decided to check what emissions designation I had, assuming that I had the regular U.S. emissions program. However, I just found out that I'm cali-spec. Where can I find out exactly the mechanical differences between U.S. spec and Cali Spec?

Lou

In the faq's, only the changes to Cali-emissions in the 99 model are explained...

Thats because only 99 are affected by this. You do not to be worried about it if you own a 98 or earlier.

Are you sure of that? It's a common misconception that all 99s are Cali spec and that only 99s can be Cali spec. I'm pretty sure they didn't have the swirl valve and all that assorted **** in 96, but there must be some difference between 96 Fed spec and 99 Cali spec.

99 Cali specs also have an extra 02 sensor up front...

Edit: Thats why 99 Y pipes for cali spec are different

sorry about the misunderstanding.....What I meant is some 99s are cali spec, and I'm pretty sure pre-99s dont have all that assorted stuff either.

None of you know anything, except Ant of course. Every single year of the 4th gen max can be a cali-spec model. Only the 99 has a different y-pipe, 2k-2k1ish.

So my emissions set-up is the same? I don't have any more o2 sensors, etc.? I knew the '99 had all sorts of crap thrown in it, which is what got me wondering...

LOL, I know that and my previous statement did not contradict it either. But thanks for advising me that I don't know anything.

You have some amount of extra emissions stuff but you don't have the extra O2 that the '99 Cali has.

Are they such small differences that they're not worth mentioning?

PM Broaner, he has a 95 Factory Service Manual and can tell you exactly what the difference is (I'm assuming 95 is very similar to 96). All I know from the 99 FSM that the 99 Cali spec has SO much more junk than the 99 Fed spec.

ok. so let me see if I have this straight...

For 1995-1998 models, any aftermarket y-pipe will be the exact same? It won't matter if my car is Cali or Fed spec. (But the gains for a Fed spec maxima will be more due to the fact that 2 precats are eliminated in the y-pipe, as opposed to the 1 precat that is eliminated in the Cali spec maxima. The other precat in the cali spec maxima is located in the exhaust manifold.)

Is my thinking correct???
