the gross vehicle weight is about 4200 lb. what jack stands and floor jack shall i use? is 2 ton jack stands and floor jack ok?

if i want to work under the car, do i follow these steps?
first use floor jack to prop the front end up
put 2 jack stands to the front left and front right
lower floor jack, so the car rest on the jack stands
if want to lift the rear end, just do the same thing

some questions:
can i just lift one end and work under the car?
where to put the floor jack / jack stands?

 

2 ton jack is fine. The jack is not going to be lifting the whole car at once and will never have the full 4200 lb. load.

To work under the car, jack it up from a proper place and put a jack stand under some solid metal. Some good spots are under the suspension somewhere or a good chasis point. Check your owner's manual or a Haynes manual for some good lift points.

Yes, you can just lift up one end, even just one corner, put a jack stand somewhere solid and lower the car slowly onto the stand.

Be sure to use your parking brake so the car doesn't roll away and put something behind the wheels that are on the ground like a chock or piece of wood or rock just for good measure.

I would not lift the car up onto 4 jack stands, try and keep at least 2 wheels on the ground. If you want to lift the car up on all 4 corners, I use two ramps, drive the car onto them, jack up the other end and put 2 other ramps under those wheels. The ramps are stable enough to hold up all four corners, not the jack stands.

 

FYI, your car weighs a lot closer to 3200 pounds than 4200.

GROSS vehicle weight is the maximum weight it can handle including passengers, fuel and cargo.
