Bad cat=bad performance?

Could a bad Cat result in decreased performance. I'm not really sure, but whenever I'm on the highway, and trying to pass someone the car downshifts and the car doesn't seem accelerate to hard. When ever I do accelerate hard the car would smell of rotten eggs. Is there a way to check if the cat has gone bad? My car has about 55,649 miles on it...time to change cat?

could be a clogged cat, especially if it smells like rotten eggs

Well my cat was clogged and it did not smell like eggs. As soon as I installed a straight pipe I felt so much more power that my car never had before.

Did you have a hard time replacing the cat?

You can't unclog a cat. Your options are gutting it, straight pipe, regular replacement, or high flow cat.

It's not hard to replace at all, just use some penetrating oil on the 4 bolts and the 02 sensor. Years of being under the car and on the exhaust will make them pretty tough. It shouldn't take more than 45 mins to swap it, that's with a beer break in between.

Gut it, take 02 sensor out take converter off and jam a pipe in that beotch. Just knock all the crap out of it til it's hollow and put it back on and drive. It worked perfect on my ford pickup.

Why buy another converter, his will be fine when he guts it and a hell of lot cheaper.

with emmission gutting it will cause you to fail. also make sure when you replace the cat to put new gaskets on.

if you have problems getting it off take it to an exhust shop and just ask them to loosen the screws. when i installed my short shifter i di htis to get the cat off, they charged me $7 but it was well worht not haveing to mess with trying to get rusted *** bolts off.
