Another CV joint question

I know my CV boot is torn ive seen it with my own eyes. I dont know for how long.
My joint is quiet except for in the cold mornings when I roll out of my driveway it ticks when returning the tires straight. Am I sitting on my death bed here or is this just something I need to fix eventually.

Also with a broken CV boot will some sort of grease get onto your rims?

Eventually, your axle will freeze up and you wont be able to move, or if there is a lot of damage, your axle could fall off while your on the road.

So its up to you how much you want to risk riding on a bad CV, and dont kill anyone else.

In my experience your axle has to be in really bad shape for it to break off suddenly like that. You'll start to hear alot more noises coming from it before it gives up. Just get them remanufactured, doesn't cost too much and it's an easy job.

It happened to a friend of mine in his Dodge Caravan, he was on the highway when his axle fell apart.. its pretty uncommon but possible. Get a remanufactured one and replace it. When they tear, dirt and crap get in there which you dont want under any circumstances

I agree on the cheap part but the easy job part I do not.

The pass side axle has a carrier bearing on the shaft that must be seperated from the housing that is bolted to the back of the motor. When I did my 2 axles (doesnt pay to just do one side because you have to take out the pass side first before removing the drivers side) This bearing was frozen in the retainer......2 hours of beating on this thing to get it free.
My advice would be to soak the bearing with penetrating oil for at least a day before you attempt to change them.....

when the joint is ruined inside you are better off getting the whole new axle.. i went to some random gas station and the totall charge was 178 bucks which is pretty good. replace the whole axle and aviod future problems if u have the money 2.

$100 for the two??? Where do you live? I live in California, and the driver's side only was $160. Both would have been $320. I called around and this was the cheapest I found anywhere in the East Bay area...

Also, you don't have to change both if both aren't messed up. Again, the shop I went to (maybe its different elsewhere) just doubled the price, so I did not see any sense in doing the passenger side when the boot had not torn yet.

My cv joint makes noise too in turns, but the guys at Car X looked at it and said the boot isn't torn so it's okay. Is that true? If the boot doesn't rip it's okay? I think not! It just seems to get worse and they told me not to worry about it. I know my car and drive it everyday, I think they should be changed if its making that noise regardless of the boot not being damaged. What do you guys think?

If it makes any type of noise, the joint is ruined and should be replaced.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing, here. I paid $160 for a rebuilt driver's axle replacement. The shop put the axle in. I think they charged around $100 for the part and $60 labor.

I read the write-ups and consider myslef fairly skilled, but this job seems like a hassle. I did not consider replacing just the boot. Any other opinions?
