Auto to Manual Swap??

I have an automatic '96 SE with 110k miles that started having transmission problems. I took it into the only tranny shop that seems remotely trustworthy (affraid of dealer prices) and had them do a checkup. They say it needs a rebuild and quoted $2800. I thought I had read in some posts that a rebuild is around $1400-1600. Needless to say, if I'm going to spend this kind of money, would it be possible for me to just swap in a manual? I thought I heard rumor that it isnt difficult or much more expensive for a shop, but I figure It would be best to hear from someone(s) that has done it. Would I have to change the ECU(a mechanic at the shop I went to said yes). Any information would be helpful. Otherwise I'm just gonna get a few quotes from other shops and go waste some money, sigh...
Although, money spent on my car is much better than money spent on other crap I suppose.

Thanks for any help,

For $2800 you can get the full swap done including labor... You'll need the transmission which is about $800 itself and all the other little things like clutch master cylinder, shifter, choice of clutch or aftermarket flywheel, etc. and the actual labor which shouldnt be more than $1000
