New Brake Break in. I'm concerned..

just had the new rotors and pads put on today. My shaking has ceased. Car is now smooth as a Max should be. The only thing is- Now with the new brakes under hard braking they groan- sometimes quite louldy actually. I brought it back and they told me that it was because the pads and rotors are brand new that there is a coating thats needs to wear away and that was causing the groaning. It sounds like a loud HHMMMMM, you can also feel it through the pedal. The car stops much better and is much smoother, no more grab-release-grab release feeling when coming to a stop light- I can actually ride the brake again. But the groaning concerns me. Is this normal? I dont want to damage these brakes. Thanks

My old brake pads would moan and grind under very hard braking... but other than that they never squealed or did anything out of the ordinary. I dunno why, I'm guessing its because of the pad material

I'd like to know why it would do that as well

Right now I'm on another set of pads and new rotors... smoooooooth as can be

its so weird to see this thread because i just put in my new pads (oem) front and rear about 2 hours ago... i did the required procedure for breaking in new pads...still whenever i press the brake pedal, there is a really weird grinding noise, at first i thought, all right its probably cuz they are new but i drove for a while and it hasnt gone away...my friend told me it took him almost a week to get rid of that noise so we'll see..

so im sure you have the same thing, just give it some time

^^^ actually i've heard the same. that when possible you should try to put new rotors on with the old pads (or vice versa). something to do with the wear characteristics and prolonging the life of both.

how do u know that in factories, the rotors arent pre broken in before put on the car and only the pads r completly new?

On a similar note. I just got my brakes turned with new rotors.

DUST EVERYWHERE

I have to wash my car every week. This is highly unusual for me because I never freakin wash my car because I hate doing it. Oh well. If it does it for much longer I will just have black front rims. f it

New rotors come with a thin layer of grease that should be cleaned with alcohol. But if they are not cleaned this will go away.

The groaning sound is most likey due to over greasing the caliper pins. When over greased, the pins dont allow the pads to release from the rotors. The pads stick to the rotors causing a groaning sound. Have the brake shop get the old grease out and put in the proper amount of grease. I'd also recommend you have them put anti-squeal so the pads dont squeal. This is just grease they put on the back of the pads.

As far as breaking in brakes, it takes a good 500 miles. But the first thing you should do is drive to 40MPH and slow down moderately -5mph. Drive around for a half hour.

If you changed your rotors w/o changing pads, the pads need time to adjust to the new rotors. This is why you are getting so much dust.

It's recommended to change the pads. If you did change the pads too, I'd advise to get better brake pads next time.

hmmm...I've had great luck with the OEM, never a groan (are we talking originally about a squeal or a groan, as they are diff.--if I understand it, the groan is due to the pads, the squeal is due to the rotors, the squeal being the high pitched sound). On the front, I totally forgot to put the shims back in and did not use the kit that I had purchased. Still, no groan. So there is something about the OEM pad and the OEM rotor, just work well together. I've got 101k and the rotors are original, never been turned, no pulsation at all.

I can't really say, but I'm going to guess the poster's groan will not go away--they may have installed economical pads which are supposedly tough on the rotors, and/or maybe there are no shims in there which would be the next step in eliminating that type of noise. Anyway, in theory, something has to change with the force being applied. All things being equal, to me that would mean the installation of shims, or installing a pad with a different composition. Again, that's theory--maybe it does go away with wear, but I doubt it.

All the comments about replacing the rotors to me would only make sense in the case of a high-pitched squeal. If it is in fact a low-pitched groan, replacing rotors would be like throwing out the baby with the bath water....

I had changed both the rotors(oem) and the pads at the same time back in Nov. no problems so far I don't know if it makes any diffrence since I put ceramic pads.
