Fuel Filter is going to be the death of me...

Ok, I started at about 12:30 today, and it's now about 2:30. I"M NOT EVEN HALF WAY THERE. I have the top fuel line off, and have the clamp for the bottom fuel line loosened and hanging on to the fuel line. I cannot get the bottome fuel line off. In about an hour's worth of cranking the engine/pulling on the line, I've gotten about an eigth inch of movement. PLEASE give me suggestions on what to do. I have the intake completely off, I have an abs system, and have cranked my poor engine at least 50 times so far. I don't know if this is the original filter (I now have 135k mi) which might explain why this is so damn difficult. I don't know. Please shed some light on this.

Lou

Its not easy, took me probably an hour to do the entire thing. Keep working at it, you will eventually get it. Theres really nothing that can help, so just keep working at it.

Use pliars, but wrap them in tape so you dont rip the hose. Keep twisting back and forth.

That's what I've been trying to do, but since I have ABS there's not a lot of play room to do that. Thanks for the replies, I have to go to work, so tomorrow afternoon I will get back after it.

I had a hard time removing my hoses. I sprayed wd40 around the top of the hose, and allowed it to seep in a bit. Then I used a flat head screw driver and gentally pried between the top of the hose and the filter until I was able to start twisting the hose with my hand off.

I was going to ask if you had ABS because it makes things worse.Try removing your intake assembly to make more room for yourself. That's what I do now because my arms are too big to fit in that area and I don't have ABS.

Everytime I am working on my car and I'm at the point when I'm like AHH I CANT DO THIS - my dad says "If I told you I would give you a million dollars to get this done - you'd find a way to get it done". 9 times outta 10 thinking about that annoys me to the point I get it done. So just keep that in mind, and you'll get that hose taken off.

i was never able to get them off by twisting so i just cut them. the line is long enough to let you cut about half an inch off right at the fuel filter.

yea.... the filter was a real pita. had to cut both bottom hose and top hose to take off. that was easy. tha hardest part was putting it back on.. we were forced to lube up the hoses and try to slip it in. finally after numerous attempts it was finally achieved.

whata f*ckin PITA. good luck

yeah i dont think cutting it off is a real solution to this. use some needle nose pliers or twist from side to side and pull it off then.

I have no real mechanical experience but was able to take the filter off by using a small flat head screwdriver and allowed some air to get in between the hose and the filter and just pryed it off in like 3 min. Just don't pull it off as everyone said. Take your time and get something in there and pry it off.

If you want to get it replaced, go to Nissan dealer shop, and buy a Filter for a 96 300 ZX, it would fit fine. Good luck.

+1

take off intake hoses + MAF assembly before doing this,
1) take off top hose,
2) pull filter out of the clip
3) bend the filter 90 deg towards the front of the car, exposing bottom clamp
4) loosen the bottom clamp, using a flat screw driver pry the hose off.

15mins tops,for the whole thing.

if you have small hands you can do this pretty quickly... get your girlfriend or sister to do this...

as everyone in the thread have said... twist and pull... that's the only way.

and patience... it took me about an hour or so for me to do the entire job.

Ok, well I had taken off the intake assembly to the throttle body, and I did take out the fuse to the fuel pump and cranked at least 50 times to try to relieve pressure build up. I'll definately try with the screwdriver/prying trick after I give the twisting with tape-wrapped pliers a go. Thanks for the help everyone. I hope my car feels better, I know it probably needs it.

Let us know how it goes. As mentioned, don't just yank on it. Get a scredriver between the rubber hose and the neck of the fuelfilter and pry it to get some Air inbeteween than work it. Common sense. i.e. Tough to get a condom off by pulling it off from the ends however, if you lift it off the bottom and get some air in between, you can break the seal.

I was saving that one for the knock sensor . Yeah, I have enough room without the intake in, so I'll be back on later to update.
