copy of a ignition key

Just got my 99 black GXe and it only came with one key, so i went to home depot and the dude said that ther isa CHIP inside the key and that he cant copy it. I dont think ther is anything inside the key, but then I went to dealer and he told me its gonna be aroun 150 he has to take my car in and repragramm my whole system and teh new key. Is this true i have to shell out 150 for a a copy of a KEY!!!?

Yes you have to go to Nissan for that, they charge you around $130 a key. If you have a retail account with them you be able to get it for 79 and 25 to program it.

Home depot CAN make a duplicate, but you will just not be able to start the car with it. I got a duplicate made of mine, just to open the doors in case I lock the main inside by mistake. I tried starting the car with it, and it will start, but turns off right away if the chip is not by the steering column.
Unfortunetly, the dealer does charge an arm and a leg for a new key because they have to program the new key and reprogram your old key & the main system in the car.
I've had my car over four years with just one chipped key and I've never had any problems (knock on wood). I suggest not paying the $150 and just being extra careful.

I was under the impression that only the 99 SE had a chipped key. Is your key oval shaped or kinda square shaped? An oval key is NOT chipped.

...just take the chip out...or cut off the end(u dont want to leave the full key next to the ignition im sure)...then glue it to a piece of plastic under the steering wheel.....then go to home depot and get as many keys as you want ...for cheap

I have a 98 so i dont have that....but i dunno

Very Smart Idea, Its great. Let's do that, It make it so much easier to take the car.

But won't that defeat the purpose of having a chipped key?

Get a remote starter. It sends the chip's signature to the computer during start, which is all the computer looks for. Then simply put whatever duplicate key into the ignition, turn to on, and drive away. Most alarm systems will only send the key signature during remote start, so if anybody else tries to start it with a regular key it won't work.

99's are chipped keys. "Gluing the chip" to plastic near the ignition cylinder will defeat the purpose of a chipped key. If you have remote start it will not matter, once you insert the key it again has to recognize the chip because the remote start will disengage (in most situations). It is possible to get the key copied though and not programmed, just to open the doors if keys are locked in.

Au Contraire. To have a remote start system work with the chipped key you have to wire in a bypass module which needs a key with a chip inside it, so you actually will need 2 chipped keys to have a remote start.

I went to a local locksmith/key making place and they were able to clone the key for only $40. That's really good compared to like the $150 Nissan wanted to charge me and plus they said they had to reprogram all the keys or some bs like that. Try calling some local key shops and see what they say. BTW the key does start up the car and it stays on, it works perfectly.

no i meant they clone your key completely meaning they cut the key and they copy the chip data from the original key and put it into the copy. it's a perfect clone.
