rear wheel drive maxima in the works

what's up org,,, yea you read it right i' m getting pretty serious about doing it ,, i was about to boost the car and i was planning on running serious power 500-600 whp and i was looking to get good track times as well but i looked at hal's times and i figured that that much power is usless with no traction so i decided to break that wall and deal with traction problems first and right now i'm looking to do it right from the first time and i'm doing my research and i was looking for info on different options some of you might think about and i actually have some specific ? like how durable is the drive shaft from the 300zx and how much power can it take ,,, and i saw that the rear units have different ratios whitch one is better,,,,,, and does any one know the gear ratios in the 300zx,,, i'm basicaly looking for the least drive train loss so light drive shaft and so on so it doesn't have to be a nissan unit it can be any car or combination ,, it has to be customed anyways thnx guys for your help in advance

If money's no object then get a carbon-fiber driveshaft mfg that'll fit whatever you decide on. Lightest and least loss. I don't know how much power they support offhand though.

haha, good luck man, but imo, one of the things that makes the max unique is fwd, and the ability to work off that makes whoever does it a respectable driver and builder. thats my .02

i agree, thats gonne be a lot of work and cuting and welding but in the end your going to end up with somthing completly diferent and ridiculous so stick with it shop the bone yards fo 300zx rear ends and go for it and then tell us how it works out, i would probably worry more about mounting the motor and trany before you worry about diferentials just my .02

i have a friend with a carbon fiber shaft in his 350z and it pushes 480 at the wheels and they say it should hold up to 600horse with no problem when he gets back from over seas i will ask him were he got it but your best bet is to find some one to custom make one for you unless you can fit that one in to work with your setup

you're not being rude ,,,, i'm planning on spending maybe $1500 that's with a mechanical lsd and a carbon fiber shaft and most of it is going for shipping since i'm stationed in guam for now that's why it's gonna be cheap cuze i can use the military hobby shop ,that's where i did my 5 speed conversion

now,,, does anybody know the gear ratios on the 300zx tranny or any other tranny really i don't care and how is that related to the ratio claimed on the rear unit , i know the 3.7 is open differential and 3.9 is vlsd but my ? is does that ratio affect the final drive ratio in combination with the gear ratios in the tranny,,, to explain my ? better " will i see any difference if i combine the same tranny with two different rear unit 'pumpkins' beside locking or not locking"

if i were you, I'd get a ford rear end as far as I know they will hold up to whatever you can throw at it. Or just buy a 350 drivetrain and drop it in, probably the easyest way.
Build tunnel, mount shocks/springs, motor mounts, and do what tilley did to run a 3.5 off a 3.0 ecu and your done.

just my .02, but if you had your own lift and were able to do all the work yourself it really wouldn't be allllll that hard to pull off

theres actully two cars here in town that are doing rwd setups. They both ran 10's.One is a 1gen awd eclipse the other is a 90 ford probe. but think the 4th gen max is a little to nice for a rwd setup. A 3rd gen would be perfect though.

Well, you could easily call it the STOTY (Stupid Thread of the Year). We have the whole year to see where this project goes.

If you are asking these kinds of questions, I am certian that you don't have the knowledge to get this conversion done. You have a LOT of learning to do about how cars work.

hey thnx for your support dude ,, i think the hardest part now is to find the right parts like the drive shafts and the half shafts cuze it has to have the right length and all ,, i have 95000 miles on it and it runs stronger than ever and if all goes well this will be the first maxima into the 10's and 9's and maybe faster if my gearing helps me
