Rebuilding Brake Calipers

I have a set of front brake calipers that I had powdercoated. I also have the rebuild kit. I have never rebuilt brake calipers before, Can someone with experience in this give me some tips.

One of mine went bad and I just got a new assembly and returned the old one for a credit. They're easy to remove but it's usually not worth it to rebuild them...did you gut the pistons and everything from the casting or did you have the finish done with the calipers assembled?

I painted the ones on my dad's 2002 SE and did it while they were assembled.
