Why do I barely get 200 miles to a tank of gas?

The only thing I can think of is that I need to replace my catback, it is rusting out, especially the muffler which is flaking apart. Would that cause me to lose over 100 miles per tank, assuming from other posts that the average maxima owners gets 300-350 miles to the tank. What else could it be? I am real puzzled to say the least, plus I am losing major cash with every tank of gas.

After reading a recent post on gas mileage I am beginning to feel cheated since I am only getting like 190-200 when the needle is actually on the "E".

Thanks for any info

Do a full tuneup, but you'll most likely need new oxygen sensors: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=289189 or it could be the KS

Bad Oxygen sensor. Go to a local Autozone have them scan your Computer, They do that for free. If you like to do the manual scan and sit in the car and count the lights, you can do that as well.

The bad oxygen sensor idea is a total myth. I have had bad o2 sensors on every single max I have owned, two 95s and a 96, and I can get more than 400 miles per tank in each one of them. I don't know why you are getting bad gas mileage, but it's not the oxygen sensors.

Nismotic: I check my tire pressure every time I fill up so it's not that. I replaced my knock sensor last year. My throttle body is relatively clean (although it may be time to clean it again). I do not have a lead foot, I barely go over 3 rpms. My air filter is brand new.

MaximaMike: I replaced my spark plugs for my 60K service. I received an O2 sensore code once but it never came back.

On a personal note, I guess SterlingMaxima was just humbling himself by helping a lowly subordinate like me. He is not one of those arrogant, self-important org member, go figure.

Conrad823: It's cool to see someone from Staten Island on here. what part of Staten Island are you from? I am from West Brighton. Nice ride. yeah I am curious to see how the stadium is going to turn out after all the hype in the news.

Thanks for everyone else's comments too, I am going to look into the O2 sensore since I retireived a code once already.

And about it being "another one of those threads", I apologize for my naiveness in the maxima community. I do not get on as often as I would like and therefore am unaware of the redundant, cliche threads. I know I know I know: DO A SEARCH. Yada Yada Yada. How much does it take to type a sentence reply. I have seen the same people who nag others to perform a search frutilessly argue with an org member for three pages over nothing more than pride. Then agaian, what do I know. I place very low on the hierarchy around here. What a farce.

Your trip meter could be getting stuck sometimes. Possible.

Well i did a gas mileage test the last time i put gas in. I put in 9.6 gallons and got 166 miles out of it. That equals 17.2 mpg, i drive about 60/40 split between city/hwy miles does that sound normal? Seems low to me. I do have a KS code [who doesn't] but i'm not sure if it's bad or not. I'm thinking i should be in the mid 20's mpg.

Nothing shocking from your info. I get around 240 with city and highway driving. Crappy gas mix with bad weather and city driving will have an affect on the mpg.

If gas money is your concern, than I would recommend a tiny 4 cylinder. Owning a V6 is not cheap.

It must be the city driving. Although I do not go far, I do a lot of start and stop driving because of the new traffic lights Staten Island puts up every week. Plus builders are trying to put up houses on every square inch of this borough. People have sold their front and backyards to builders on my block. It is insane here. But I digress, lol. Back to my city driving:

Too many new houses + Too many traffic lights = bad gas mileage

Yes, a whole in your exhaust system could contribute to the problem. Yes, city driving will certainly effect your total gallons per mile.
When is the last time you had a full tune up? That would also certainly contribute to your miles per gallon...

well now i usuallly average about 250 miles here in the city however I just took a long road trip salt lake to san antonio and back and averaged using gas purchased and mile marker calculations about 440 miles per tank . i say mile marker because My dang odometer ran off a total of only 200 miles during that trip which was 3300 miles round trip . it would work in the mornings when cold up to around 99 miles then stop. i took the cluster out put a few drops of light oil in the odometer but that didnt help any .. anyone else think i need a new cluster just for the odometer? the dang thing works when cold but around 30 mins of driving it stops. this is every day

I'm having the same problems and everything in the linked post I've done. My last resort is coil packs.

I think it's hard for some people to diagnose misfires. I'm not sure I would know one if I tripped over it. I'm thinking it's my coil packs given that I've replaced everything else. It's been going on so long, I don't know if my car's performance is weak or not. Some people may have the same problem.
