96 Maxima Tach Problem

Hi all...anyone have experience troubleshooting and fixing the tach in their Maxima? In my case, the tach rests at about 2000 when I start the car up...and as I drive it bumps up higher in steps...until it reaches about 7 or 8000. When I shut the car off, it goes back to 0. I'm a new owner, I pick the car up tomorrow. The tach is the only problem I spotted when looking over the car. Thanks for any advice.

i had that problem right before i recently totaled the car week before christmas. Your also gonna notice that the miles on the odometer wont roll either. Though i noticed once in awhile the tach will out of nowhere work again. the tach will eventually not spring back to 0 if you let it go past the red. But then it will just catch out of nowhere and then the system works. I heard a few other peeps have the same problem. Only seen it in 95s which i have and 96s. I dont know what the problem is or how to correct it. I was gonna try and replace the cluster. Now that i dont have to you can persue the issue.

I picked the car up today and checked to see if the odometer does in fact work....it does....it still rolls over. But the tach still doesn't work properly.
Any ideas?

Yup i had this problem. Exept mines would sometims creep, sometimes stay at idel. And if i dumped the clutch it would work for a second..lol

Just get a cluster of ebay or junkyard and change just the tach part it is pritty easy to do, just becare full if you have to change your needle.

Put up a wtb thread in parts and someone will have one for sale.

I got mines from jepht20. He might have more tachs

Pm me if yu got any other questions.
