Clutch going bad?

I just got a new clutch put in about 3-4 months ago, and it cost me $1066, and the last couple of days I've noticed that it doesnt engage as crisply anymore. It's gotten to the point where I cant really even tell that its engaging, and that leads me to stall on occassion (always embarassing). My clucth lines have a very slow leak in them, and im going to try bleeding them tomorrow, but I just wanted to know if all this could be air in the clutch lines, or if I'm just screwed and need a NEW clutch. Also, when I got the new clutch, no one ever told me about breaking it in right, and im rather new to 5-speed, so I was kinda rough on it I guess. Could not breaking it in right cause it to wear out so quickly? I believe it was a Nissan OEM clutch that was put in, and a new flywheel and everything... I just want this thing working crisply again, any suggestion are greatly appreciated, and thanks for reading this.

Yea man, over a grand seems a little stiff. I paid a little over $700 for my clutch, but didn't but a new flywheel -- I only got mine remilled.

You said it yourself, if your line has a small leak why not start there. My only question, did the repair shop see the leak, why didn't they replace the line? True there is a break in time for a new clutch, but unless you were reving the engine and dumping the clutch as soon as you got it back from the shop I wouldn't be too worried it not being broken in correctly. But since you mentioned it, how rough were you?

after a new clutch install, you are suppose to go easy on the clutch for about 500 miles to break it in.

the shop that did the work noticed that the slave cylinder was bad, so they replaced that, but the leak remains, so i guess i gotta get them to do something about that. as for how rough i was, i tried to take it pretty easy for atleast a week id say, only about 100 miles at best though, and even then, im a newb so starting in first gear is never to clutch friendly. i will talk to the shop owner, because he is a friend of mine, which is why i didnt check around, cuz i figured he wouldnt screw me... ohwell, cant trust anyone.

My clutchnet is going in next month - Do you guys change flywheel when you do the clutch most of the time? How much is an OEM? And how much to get it remilled?

You just resurface the flywheel.

If I do need to replace the clutch again, what is the longest lasting clutch? Would it be just the Nissan OEM one, or maybe a 5th gen? I'm not gonna be doing all kinds of performance mods where I'd need a staged clutch or anything, but if those last longer, then I might get one just for the durability. Any input is very welcome.

without the proper 500mile break-in you can prematurely wear out the clutch/fw

1st i suggest you go back to the same shop, tell them your problem... about the new clutch, but dont tell them you didnt do the proper 500mile break-in.. tell them ever since they installed it, it started acting funny.. wasnt grabbing right, and would slip

2nd find a better shop, dont go back anymore.. if they couldnt even tell you the standard procedure to breakin there kinda grimey

3rd dont ever spend 1gran on a nissan clutch/fw, i paid the same price for my mk4 but that is expected but not on a maxima

4th dont forget to bleed the break, eliminate all possible causes

5th a new clutch can go bad, if installed improperly.. good LUCK

(sincd you said you drove it pretty rough, before breakin, i think that is your problem)

I heading over to the shop right now, gonna have a word with the owner, and hopefully get some stuff straitghened out, becasue its really bugging me. And just out of curiosity, could it really go bad within about 2k miles just from not being broken in right? That seems awfully quick.

not to get OT, I know how you mean about not knowing when it engages, My friend and I went test driving a bunch of cars, and I drove the Tiburon 03 GT 6 speed, and I kid you not when I say you cannot feel the engagement at all! It was so weird.

what exactly entails resurfacing a flywheel? just spray a solution and clean? or more?

another thing that is always just classic, when i got in my car to take it to the mechanic, the clutch felt just fine... it always happens, the problem fixes itself when you go to get it fixed. but anyhow, does that sound right, that maybe the lines are old, and so after long periods of driving they stretch out too much, and i get the mushy feeling?

No. Shops use a machine to smooth out the surface.

Dont you hate it when that happens, then they look at you like your crazy, usually its just because the car heated up on the drive to, and so the problem isnt there or as loud/obvious as whenyou first cranked it up. Happened with my friend and his no oil 300zx, we heard loud noises but it was quite when we got to the dealerhsip. . . turned out he had no oil and thats all he needed to fix it.

Oh, so it take a little bit of metal off to smooth it back out to an even level? if this is true then with patience we'd have lightned fly wheel after many many flywheel resurfacings

but mainly was asking if it was something I could do, but I cant need the machine.
