Auto Shift Interlock Problem: Stuck in Park
Auto Shift Interlock Problem: Stuck in Park
Hi,
Before I say anything else, I have looked for the last 2 hours through the forum using search. I have jsut made myself more confused. The problem is the common one that the max will not shift out of park. The button is jammed on the shift lever. I have tried moving the steering wheel a million times, pushing the brake different ways, engaging and disengaging (as the threads say) the e-brake. It is parked on a level surface at the moment. I know on the 02 they have a shift lock bypass. Do the 4th gens have this? What can I do just to get it working now? How can the shiftlock be bypassed? One thread said it was in the upper left hand corner of the shift mechanism. However I am lost and don't see what it means. The more descriptive, the better (I have to explain this over the phone to my wife who is going to try it since she has the day off). Thanks again.

I had a similar problem a while back. I tend to keep coffee in the cup holder and it would spill over the shift lever area from time to time. I was stuck in park. I took the cover off the shift lever and cleaned up the mechanism underneath. No problem since.
