'98 vs. '99 SE...are there any major differences?

Hi guys, it looks like I'll be driving a 4th gen once again. Well I've been looking for a second car and a 4th gen was at the top of my list. If some of you remember I use to drive a '99 ES Limited that I totalled.

Anyways, I've been looking at '97-'99 SE's and found some good prices on '98 and '99's in my area. Are there any major differences between these 2 years? I know that the '98's dont have the AMB temp button and I heard that the '99's have a different ecu, is this true?

Any input would be great!

99's are not good for speed unless youre not going to be heavely modding because they DO have differnt ecu's that cant be upgreaded due to differnt pinouts an added key security transmitter or "imobilizer" basically the not being able to upgrade the ecu takes the cake for me because then you cant take proper use of any variable intake manifolds or top end power at all. just basic bolt on's. then theres the facts of if you see a 99 you should always check to see if its a fed spec or cali spec because the cali is just like all the newer max's as that theres way way more emission controls on them and the y pipe is only the rear manifold and back basically which leaves the front precat there which cant be removed because its got an O2 sensor in it. Its not really a big deal with the exhaust or anything but if i could rebuy my max id deff get a 97-98 because at the stage im at now i cant really get anything that will work with my powerband aka (mevi, ecu) which are 2 of the biggest power adders of the 4th gen. hope i helped -Ryan

replacing a key on a 99 will cost you $100 as well due to the immobilizer

+1 to everything above. you'd also probably spend less money for a 98. o yea COIL PACKS. they're infamous for dying out quick on a 99. goodluck

I have a red 99 SEL 5 speed California spec; just bought it about a year ago with 45000 miles on it, paid $11,200; it is in good shape, top of the line. but unfortunally I think is the slowest car in the world; everybody beats me up taking off; is extremelly slow and heavy; even little civics, accords, minivans, etc.. everybody beats me up, acelerates really slow; I think is really embarasing, so I do not even try to race anybody at all. I used to have a 89 honda accord and it was faster. I was looking into upgrading y pipe but was worthless because only removes 1 precat instead of 2 with Fed. specs. I really like my car, is nice and comfortable but hate it to be so slow, drinks lots of gas and insurance is crazy expensive; may get something faster, even a civic and with maybe $1000 you can put a turbo, intake, etc.. and will fly. On the other hand I am an older man with lots of tickets in the past, so that might me a positive thing about my slow car. Do not get a CA specs.

CA spec Max's dont restrict HP figures anywhere near what your talking about. Your either extremely exaggerating or you have some issues with your car.. namely I would say check your codes even if the light isnt on.

Thanks for the advise, will check codes tomorrow to see if something is wrong like coil packs, spark plugs or something else; and I am not exagerating at all, I wish someone like you or somebody with a diferent car drives/races my car to compare it. the major problem is taking off, once you are over 50 mph then is powerful, but a little to late for street racing.
