need a tranny b4 I boost...

so I'm on my 2nd tranny in my 95 right now and is whining in 1st....my 1st tranny lasted a year this way...and I am much easier on this tranny....but still want something with much lower mileage without bad diff. bearings...

I am basically trying to decide between an I30 LSD 5spd and a 2000-01 maxima 5spd....

I originally wanted the 20th anniv. '01 maxima 5spd to get the strength and smoothness of the 5th gen trannies and the LSD of the I30's (best of both worlds) but there are absolutely none on the market right now (ebay or car-part.com or toms4n.com)...so I am stuck choosing between an open diff smooth, 5th gen tranny which is supposedly stronger (plus I have a STS which hits the front of the shifter cut-out/console, so the 5th gen tranny would place the shifter a little further back which would be nice) and an I30 LSD tranny which would be very necessary with the torque of a boosted setup...

I would like the best of both worlds, but it doesn't look to be possible unless I find a 20th anniv. 5spd laying around...

how do the I30 LSD 5spd's hold up to the power of boost? did any of them suffer from differential bearing failure?

they are about the same price for the mileage....so that is not a deciding factor...

if I do go with the I30 LSD tranny...what would you guys suggest I do to move that aftermarket STS back a little?

From what I have seen they hold up well. It all depends on the driver too.

I have heard of 2 cases of the AE 5spd LSD's having bearing issues. Not too sure of the I30 5spd's.

that tranny was not including the bellhousing...I called a few weeks ago...internals only...although a new bellhousing from nissan is only $300...so $900 for a brand new tranny would have been nice!

What year Maxima is your current tranny from? I've haven't heard of any 98s or 99s with differential bearing problems and am curious. I think Nissan may have corrected the factory shimming problem in later 4th gens.

mine is from a 95/96....I have a 95 maxima....

now if I could just find an AE tranny....that would net the best of both worlds....2 bad they are impossible to find!

there is one very close to me on car-part, the only one on there (coincidentally close to me out of all the possible states to be in) but the bellhousing is cracked...has a 3 month warranty or something, I wish I was a mechanic so I could tell by looking at it if it is okay or not and just buy a new bellhousing...

I know, but I wanted to confirm that your second tranny (which obviously wasn't your original tranny) was also 95/96.

Broaner just picked up an AE LSD tranny on car-part a month ago; he said it was one of two or three listed. If I were you, I'd check car-part and the other sites every day and hold out until you can find an AE tranny. It's worth it and it shouldn't be too long a wait.

Another possibility: I know the 4th gen Canadian Maximas came with optional LSD...if the 2000 and 2001 Canadian Maximas also came with this option, then you'd have a strong 5th gen gear box and LSD... Also what about 2000/2001 I30s?

the problem with the canadian 2000-01 trannies on car-part.com....is called on all 3 that there is listed....one doesn't have a mileage....the other has 120K miles or so...and the third is a disconnected #....they also don't know if it is locking or not...

in addition from canada shipping would be around $350 or so due to some paperwork and duties....added on to the cost...

yeah...I remember when there were 3 AE trannies on car-part.com....I was talking to one of the junkyards and 1 week before I was going to buy it, it was purchased....according to the guy...someone with a 97 maxima...

the other was almost $1100 dollars or so and didn't even have a mileage listed...and the third is the one in california near me which has a cracked bell housing...

Give it a few more miles...

95/96's had serious issues... but then again it depends how you drive. I'm sure 90% of those with the 95/96 failures beat the crap out of their car.

As far as I have heard the I30 transmissions are only good to lock up about 30%... If it were me I'd still go with the 00-01... Even if it didnt have an LSD. You could always save up a little more $$$ and get an aftermarket LSD and put it in after you get the transmission, it will lock a whole lot better and will save from you tearing the transmission apart after you put it on the car.

Ant, sorry, let me rephrase that:
