Maxima stutters...

Car has 230k miles, and recently it's got this problem of stuttering. It happens at all rpms, although seems worse at lower rps(below 3k). For some reason it doesn't do it in neutral, only in gear. It's so bad the car is barely driveable. I changed out the fuel and air filters, which did nothing. At this point I'm thinking maybe clogged injectors or maybe even timing off. Anyone got any ideas?

same thing happened to me. does your car smell of gasonline? turns out my fuel injectors were putting gas into my engine and was making it burn rich. could be other things though, such as the maf sensor, or other sensors.

The possibilities are endless. Did you read the Stickies? What year?Things i would do/check are as follows:

1. Check ECU for codes [Is your check engine light on?]
2. Clean your throttle body
3. Plugs
4. Check coil packs
5. Clean Injectors

Yes I have noticed a faint smell of gas when I get out of the car. What did you do to resolve the problem?

The CEL isn't on, but I haven't checked the codes for the 'silent' knock sensor code. Changed the plugs already, but I'll try the other stuff to.

Thanks to both of you for the quick replies.

One other question- anyone know where I can get a cheap O2 sensor(rear)? my folks ran a tank of 87 through their max and killed it, and they want me to fix it

Oh and I just noticed, it doesn't seem to have a problem before it's at normal operating temperature. It's not at idle though, it idles fine. Thanks for the link sim, I'm leaning toward coil packs now, but as you asked in your thread is there any way to test them aside from replacing?

Yah, that's what I was thinking. Put it in neutral, and the misfires go away. Same thing happened to me when I had some misfire issues.

Any codes? You probably smell gas when you get out of your car, because when it misfires, gas still goes into the piston, but doesn't burn. So the exhaust has some pure gas fumes in it.

Anyway...have you messed with coil packs lately? Have any mechanics changed coil packs or spark plugs?

I'd change your spark plugs with some NGK coppers at $12 for 6, and inspect your coil packs at the same time. See if any boots are torn or missing. Check for oil leaking in cylinder spark plug holes, which will cause misfire.

Or maybe ur MAF.

Or maybe your 02 sensor. Why do you KNOW that your parents killed it? Codes ur not saying?
