noise on cold start-up

Hi, I have a 96 GLE with almost 140,000 miles. Lately when i start it up cold, I hear a sound like a belt slipping or something for about a second..then just normal engine noise. this does not happen when the engine is warm, only cold start-up. Does anyone have any ideas?....the car runs great otherwise.

is it more of a whizzing sound than a squeak from a belt? if so, it's your starter sticking.

hold your key in the start position for 1 more second on a cold start to make the noise go away.....it is your starter sticking, I think it's normal...in cold weather...

it's not your timing belt as our cars don't have a belt they have a chain so if it's not a chatter type noise then you can eliminate the timing chain, most likely is a belt, see if it persists when the weather warms up, if so get someone to help you locate it and either replace or tighten. Doubting it's the starter itself they make a whinning noise but consistantly regardless of engine temp, not just on cold start up. Could be your alternator belt. Good luck.
