Took my Max in for a SES light regarding the o2 sensor (front heated o2 sensor, left bank), supplied the o2 sensor as well as a knock sensor (also tripped, figured I replace the KS w/ over 117K on the odo), after picking up the Max (I work a lot during the week), the diff. in acceleration is night & day. Used to have hesitations b/w 2K-3K rpms .. gone!! No hesitations at all! Didn't get a chance to test it full throttle yet, but that chance will come soon. All I have left to do is a windshield to replace, as well as foglights & a cracked driver's mirror (both damaged by my brother, I will replace b4 I take the Max to Chicago this spring to visit my brother), then the modding can start. I've got some plans for this car, slowly but surely though.
Oh, stupid bastards that worked on my car turned on my radio when I left it off and antenna down. They ran the Max thru the car wash w/o turning off the radio (antenna was up) so they bent my antenna (this isn't the 1st time I replaced the antenna mast, 1st time was caused by my brother). When I saw this, I complained to the service manager and they're willing to replace the antenna mast at no cost.

I know that feeling after I did mine and knock sensor I didnt get those results but after the ECU "fix" I felt that HUGE change from the ECU running in safe mode to normal. I feel in love with my car all over again...

Where or what site did you purchase the sensors at? My I30 has over 170k miles on it, wouldn't mind replacing these.

i ordered the knock sensor from Jerry Rome Nissan online, the o2 sensor i bought from Autozone

do O2 sensors make a big differnce? i replaced my knock sensor lastyear so its not bad but i get a code every 500 or so miles for my rear heated O2 and only get like 200 miles per tank of gas!!

O2 sensors affect the performance and efficiency of cars a lot!! Replace them if you want to finally get over 200 miles a tank! That's rediculous! I replaced mine after installing the y-pipe and with the two being changed, my max flew afterwards!Originally Posted by joosdawg

hmmmm, my max started getting worse and worse mileage. Now i'm down to around 200mi per tank, when i could get over 400mi 8 months ago. 173k and i dont know if the previous owner changed any sensors or not. (probly not) Are O2 and knock sensors expensive and/or hard to replace?
Kinda expensive from the stealership but I would only get the knock sensor from there because you can rely on their quality over otehr atuo parts stores; the O2 sensors from any other auto parts store, the knock sensor may cost from $100-170 and the O2 sensors from $30-90...hope this helps...

all wgoo have gotten new O2 sensors did u get universal or OEM style with the harness? this is so annoying lastyear first it was genral maint. so fuel filter, knock sensor, TB cleaning, new cone filter, new plugs, synthetic fluids ect. now in the last 2 months ive had to get new tires a headlight went out twice, corner light twice, a foglight, tail light, random coil packs(still not fixed), now the O2 sensor code. I mean cmon maxi i spose i just need to feed her half my tax return and she'll come around flying again

Same thing happened to me with my antenna at the dealership, they replaced it but acted like they were doing me a favor by not charging me. Bums. Try www.oxygensensors.com for O2 sensor, real good prices and free shipping.

depends on where you get them from. As i mentioned earlier, there is currently a group deal on knock sensors from Jerry Rome Nissan so check the group deal forum. I got the o2 sensor from Autozone for $78.Originally Posted by maxracer

Sounds like quite a difference in performance after changing these out. I only have 60k on my Max, but once my tax return check comes back, I am going to replace the exhaust, o2 sensors, and ks all in one shot. Midaswell do it all in one day while it's up on the lift.
Senior Member
Its quite a difference ONLY if your ECU is running in safe mode... a bad 02 will almost always trigger the Knock Sensor... meaning the car is running a pre programmed plot that will make the car run very rich... hence the bad gas mileage.
Senior Member
no doubt my speed is garbage again! so does it go back when i "reset" the ecu? or do i need to replace an O2 sensor or 2. my car has about 150K no O2 sensors are new but KS is. the only code coming up is the rear O2 sensor so should i just replace that one only if im on a tight budget will that fix it? i dont even remember what my car used to feel like cause everytime its dry enough to get anywhere either my KS coil packs or O2 sensors are bad grrrr
Senior Member
WHen you reset your ECU the codes are stored for another ECU cycle of 200 miles, if the problem is still there, the ECU will spit the light out again at you. You'll still have the same problems, lagging and sluggishness until you change them.
If its showing only 1 02 sensor bad... go ahead and change that 1... should you change both, yea but if you dont have the money and the front one is working fine you dont HAVE to.

wait so which is more important than the other in performance wise, the knock or the o2? i mean does it feel like a new max or something? is it diff to instal?
Senior Member
ok but i thought the sensor after the cat doesnt make a differnce in the engine performance. im getting the code 0510 rear heated oxygen sensor bad, i thought it only reads the rear when one of the fronts goes out? so what should i do then if thats the only code im getting?
Senior Member
man i really don't know about this, it may be good, but as of now, i don't need it replaced although i want some performance. plus i believe there are 2 sensors up front or either the rear, can't remmeber.
just replace the rear o2 sensor, your KS code will more than likely be tripped as well

funny you mentioned that, when I went to the Autozone near my house to ask for a front heated o2 sensor for the left bank, they didn't know what I was talking about, and they asked me whether it was before or after the catalytic converter and I was saying to myself "ok, who gave you your job, dumba$$?" so I went to another Autozone, they knew what I was talking aboutOriginally Posted by g4nismo

I was going to replace all my sensors (on the exhaust piping and manifold etc...) but I'd much rather have my mechanic look at it at the next tune-up

How about if you have a cali-spec, should you replace all 4? That would get pretty pricey.Originally Posted by Ant96GLE

What do you mean by the ecu fix. Just that your knock sensor was bad and your ecu was in safe mode. Or you just reset your ecu... I have not replaced my knock sensor or O2's but probably should since ive been boosted for so long. Can you just clean the O2's? I did read in a magazine months ago about some new O2 sensors bosch has come out with that are supposed to be alot better than the standard ones out. Any opinions???
Im representing cali

oh, is the term "my mechanic" fancy for when I take it to a shop and get it fixed?? I can't say I have ever had "my own mechanic" or someone I could consider my mechanic. Seems like 90% of the people in here have there own mechanics. Am I missing out on something ??

Senior Member
ok sense no one really answered my question, doesnt all the fed specs only read the rear O2 sensor if one of the front ones goes out? also will my testpipe make it go bad prematurly?
Senior Member
If one of the front 02's go out, the engine goes into safe mode... the rear one does not know how rich/lean each bank is running independantly

Wow! Great info out here. Thanks everyone for sharing their knowledge and experiences.
I'm having the sluggish response, hard starts and terrible gas mileage so I come to the org and learn how to read the ECU codes...whaddaya know...it's the dreaded KS code 0304. I'm not getting any CEL, just the 0304 code. Gonna get a KS, but should I go ahead and replace O2 sensors, too or just leave them alone and not disturb the system?
BTW, it's a 95 SE auto with 170K...all original sensors

so should i replace all 3 or will replacing the front 2 take care of the safe mode BS? cause those things are expensive! so does everyone replace with the "oem" style O2 with the harness or universal?
Senior Member
Universal works the same if you dont have the money but you have to splice them in. The oem type just plug right in. Just change whichever one is bad... Its nice preventive maintenance to do them all at once... but you dont have to.
Senior Member
yea but its giving me the 0510 rear heated O2 and nothing else so whats that supposed to mean if im getting such bad gas milage...safe mode? so i should do all 3?
Great timing for this thread to appear. I just got the 1001 code yesterday. Can anyone point me to where I can find some instructions on replacing this sensor. To be honest, I don't even know where it's located. All I know is that it's the Front Left sensor. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks.

unless your other o2 sensors are giving off codes, then just replace the rear heated o2 sensor. W/ any bad o2 sensor, your gas mileage and engine performance will sufferOriginally Posted by joosdawg
