strange sound that i think is coming from the clutch help!

recently ive been noticing a strange almost clicking-whining sound coming from my car. its most noticable at cold start ups, and i think this is because the car is idling and revving so high at that point. untill today the sound would normally go away after the engine warmed up and i drove around a bit; but today i noticed that it was even noticeable from slow driving around my neighborhood. but the thing that makes me think it might be a clutch problem is that when i press the clutch all the way in the sound stops completely. my dad thinks it may just be a loose piece of metal hitting the clutch but what do you guys think? help please!

hmmm this could be from the clutch. it also could be the drive shaft (axle) considering the noise stops when u push the clutch in....

strange sound

Hopefully it's your clutch and not your transmission. My 96 max se 5-speed started making a rattling sound about six months after I bought it. It had 60,000 miles on it at the time. It would make the rattling sound only when the clutch was pedal was not pushed in. It could be your clutch but mine ended up being my tranny. The good thing though, I drove it for another 60,000 miles after the noise started. I was told my throw-out bearing could have been the culprit but that was just a guess.

Sounds like an bad bearing (input/main/diffy) to me. It goes away when you put the clutch in, huh? Try getting up to about 5MPH, coasting (in gear) with the clutch in...see if it still makes the noise.
