You can remove your stock auto shifter and then cut the shifter pipe and rod inside down to the level you want. Then you can put a shorter **** on it. I put an alum. ball type shifter that you push down to release the shift lock. It only sits about 2 inches high. I had to run the OD wires to a button that I installed by the steering wheel.

I'll post pics of the setup in the next day or so.

shortened shifter

Was a pretty easy job, just remove the stock shifter and hack up that pipe in the middle. You'll also need to remove the plastic **** and shorten the inner rod too.

You don't really have to get the plastic piece off if you're going to cut the rod anyways. But to remove it I just used a couple of vise grips, one holding the rod and one twisting the plastic peice. The rod ended up snapping right below the plastic peice. Then I used a Sawz-All to cut the pipe (being careful not to cut the inner rod) and then I cut the inner rod about an inch or so higher than the pipe.

I'm still waiting on the **** to be delivered. So for now I'm just driving around with the cut metal rod.

I'll post pics when the **** arrives.

I did something very similar. But rather than shorten the rod I shortened the shift ****. I made the **** out steel so it would be heavy enough to stay down over bumps. It was secured in no way other than its weight and a little bit of grease. To shift I just pushed down on the **** and it contacted the inner rod. I'm glad I don't have to deal with it now but it worked for a while. Overall my shifter was about two inches shorter than that huge stock one or even the Levoc ****.

I just installed a monitor and dvd player the same way. the shifter is not in the way of the CD's if that's what you mean.

You don't need to shorten the shifter to use/put a Radio in the Single DIN. It's easily attained from Park as well as any other gear, but if you wanna go with a Levoc then yeah, it wouldn't look right if it wasn't cut down.

(sort of BMWish)

This is what I was talking about earlier. It is certainly shorter than stock and I didn't even cut it down. Thank god I got rid of that god aweful auto. The switch in front of the cup holders is the OD. Now I gotta figure out what to do with it.

Here are the pics of the ****, it finally came in today and I got it installed in about an hour. I had to keep getting the Sawz-All out and shortening the pipe to get it to the right height. I think I got it as low and it will go. When depressed the **** sits right above the plastic trim piece.

yeah, I know I have to clean, I have metal shaving everywhere. I was lazy and didn't use a towel to cover things up this time.

and here is where I stuck the OD button

Nope, it's an auto ****, because it has a spring in it and a special sleeve that screws into the pipe. Then you just push the top down about a half inch to shift. Here is the **** I got of ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MEWN:IT Seems to be of decent quality.

can you accidentally shift to reverse from drive gear? or do you have to press down to shift to reverse?

It's behaves exactly like the stock shifter on an auto. The shift lock works as before so you can't accidentally throw your car into reverse, unless you were to push the ball down. It's perfectly safe.

It's not hard. I'll try to explain

1. buy auto shifter of your choice. Ebay's a cheap place or your local speed shop. See ball **** pic I posted above
2. remove trim around stock shifter. Butter knife works well to pry off trim piece.
3. unplug and remove cig lighter and ashtray and pull out.
4. remove two screws in front of center console and then the two screws in the back of the console. Then pull entire console out
5. remove two screws on back of stock auto shifter ****.
6. remove the PNRD21 trim piece that you can now get to after removing center console.
7. find the two wires that connect to your OD switch in stock shifter and cut them. Now you should be able to remove your stock auto ****.
8. once **** is removed you'll have to use a hack saw or sawz-all or maybe a dremel to cut the pipe down to the level you want. I cut mine down a little by little to get the height just were I wanted it. I ended up with the pipe being about an 2 long and the center rod inside the pipe being about 2.5 inches long. But depending on what **** you go with these measurements will change.
9. install new **** sleeve with provided allen wrench screws to height desired and then screw on the top half of your ball ****.
10. now if you've cut everything correctly, when you push the ball down a half inch or so it will release the shift lock and you can move the shifter as you did before with the button on the left of the stock shifter.
11. now you'll have to extend the OD wires that you cut and wire it up to a switch somewhere in your console or on your dash.

That should be it, all in all it's pretty simple.
let me know if you have any questions or need any detailed pics.

ila

Even with the stock situation the shifter can physically go into reverse. There is no need to worry if you are doing 25+MPH though. The moment the shifter goes into reverse or park the car will shutoff. It will give you time to pull the shifter back. If you begin to slow down though the tranny brake will engage and click like none other. Then you've got serious trouble because at some speed it will catch and you'll be thrown forward and your tranny will be dead. I've never experienced that last bit but that is basically what would happen.

If you want to go back to the stock **** someday then I wouldn't cut the height of the pipe. Just remove the old **** and replace it with the aftermarket one.

The outer pipe diameter is about 1/2 inch or 12.7mm so there is a little space with the shifter in the link....but it's no big deal as you can tighten it up real snug with the 3 screws provided.

I drilled out my **** with a 9/16ths bit. It fit very snugly with a bit of grease in there to keep it smooth.

It would be nearly impossible to got one that matched the stock wood anyway. I suggest staying with something metal, CF or rubber for this reason.

think it would look good to paint the exposed rod i.e. like black or maybe silver? would it be hard to do?

I thought about painting the rod or putting some electrical tape around it. It would be easy to do, but honestly you never see the rod from the angle the pics were taken. The rod isn't even noticeable from a normal driving height. I suppose if you were laying down in the back seat it might be visible, but how often does that happen?. So I didn't bother painting it.
