Yeah, everyone that is too lazy to convert to MT will do this mod. I did it in an effort to lessen the gayness of the auto but it only worked for like four days.

I took someone's advice and used som aluminum tape to cover the rusty colored shifter rod. While I had the console torn aport I used some roofing aluminum and cut a trim piece to cover the stock black one. Before the hole cut in the black piece caused the orange indicator to be in the wrong spot so you couldn't easily see what gear you were in, now with the aluminum piece with the smaller hoe the orange indicator is in the right spot again. Here are a couple of pics....disredard the crackers and messy floorboard.

I actually like my auto and have no desire to have a 5sp. Not everyone wants or needs a 5sp so don't assume so.

Looks great ilacuss! Would never know that it was tape, and the aluminum shift cover is real nice. Good job.

Yep, just tape though so it looks kinda sh!tty up close. I'm going to buy a alum e brake handle soon, so this is only temporary.

How do you go about getting the white plastic peice off the top of the inner rod? Or do you just cut it off and only use the rod itself to press it down? Thanks..

You just cut off the white plastic piece. It's not needed.

I got sick of the funny looking ball type shifter and went back to the stock one that now sits about 2 inches lower than it originally did. I actually think this looks much cleaner than the aftermarket one I originally had.

I'd sell the ball type auto shifter for cheap if anyone wants it PM.

I read the write up on how to shorten it. It seems pretty easy. Any complications in the process? Was it easy to get the stock shifter back on?

hey i was wondering if you could buy a regular auto **** with a shift button and wire the o/d button to the shift button and make it a push down shifter? does that make sense? im sure its possible, but im having problems finding a new **** i like so i figured i'd post my ? in the mean time

ilacuss- the stock **** does look better shorter but i liked the ball a lot more. i hate the "OVER DRIVE" on the **** it just looks so stupid to me if it were not there and the **** wasnt so bulky i wouldnt have a problem

To get the original auto shifter back on I had to drill 2 new holes lower on the rod so the screws on the back of the shifter would have something to screw into. I then had to buy a hole threader to add the threads back to the holes. Other than that it was easy.

I'm not quite sure I understand the question. Your best bet is just to remove your stock shifter and see how it works.

Basically the OD button is connected to 2 wires on the stock shifter that can be cut and wired into a switch that is either on the auto shifter (like the levoc models) or it can be wired up to a switch that sits somewhere else. See the pic of the OD button I had for awhile earlier in this post.

The shift lock is just a small metal rod inside a hollow pipe. The black button on the left of your shifter that you push in when you shift just hits an angled white piece of plastic and pushes the rod down to unlock the tranmission.

ilacuss,
how did you go back to stock when the original 45 degree white plastic piece can't be re-attached...... or can it???? Thanks. And good job.

I drilled out the metal rod that was inside the white plastic 45 degree angle piece. Then I just slide the plastic piece down onto the shortened metal rod that sits inside the metal tube. I heated the plastic up first with a lighter so it would sorta melt and stick the rod without wiggleing.

Nice idea man. I'm changing my shifter real soon (**** should be here this week...thanks ptato!!) I think I'm gonna make sure to just cut the rods and not break the plastic piece for future reference. I gotta say that the stock shifter lowered looks good too. But I still think ptato's shift mod is the best yet.

How exactly do you remove shifter ****? I can feel it twists. Do you unscrew it or do you pull it out after removing the 2- screws on the shifter shaft? Also how does one remove it without damaging the wires that go up the shaft?
Actually, I am trying to get at the shifter solonoid, bcuz my shifter is stuck in N_D position.
