Why does the rpm rise when I push OD on??

[Scenario]
Your crusing on the freeway...
Your climbing uphill...
You turn off OD...(Autotranny shifts into 3rd...)
You accelerate modestly maybe upto 4500ish rpm...
Still accelerating... you turn on OD...
THEN IT HAPPENS...
Your rpm jumps a few hundered and then shifts into 4th gear.
[End]

My sisters 97 pathy does this too...

Does anyone else have similar issues?
Does anyone know why the car is doing this?
What gives?

cuz o/d disables 4th gear, so by turning it back on you are adding another gear so it shifts into that

That's not even why the RPM's go up like he is describing.

It's your torque converter disengaging from the point of locked to unlocked mode.

The RPMs rise because the torque converter unlocks before it shifts into 4th.
