Supercharger Like Whistle Sound, I Like It, But Wheres It Comin From???

i noticed a long time ago and just tonight when i believe u turn on the front defroster on, and put it in first or drive either one, made my rpm go up to 2800-2900, just below 3000, it would literally make this whistling sound.

it would get louder until 3000 and when i let go of the gas, the sound kinda dissapates. i really don't mind it cause when i'm driving through a mall area,
people would prob think, whoa, check that car out, sounds like he has a supercharger or something. but wheres it comin from and why does it do that?

Might sound dumb but did you check all connections to the intake? I know mine make a little sound like that and i have a short ram intake...

i highly doubt its a vacuum leak. i don't have an intake as of now, but ordered a bomz cai, but i have a K&n filter, hacked airbox and oscai setup and resonator removed.

When you put the front defroster on, it causes your A/C to go on. You're hearing your A/C compressor whine.

its because he has a hacked box, when i only had the stock box like that the whistle sound that an intake gives you was much louder. It was weird cause i thought itd be louder with a shortram but it wasent. rest assured theres no problem with your car and it sounds cool if you can get it to go through your gears

The reason I said it's the A/C compressor is because he said that it happens [only] when the defroster is on.

I get a whistle with my CAI, but it's only when I have the gas pedal held just right.

I guess there's only one way to find out; get under the hood while it's making the noise. The intake and the A/C compressor are on opposite sides of the bay.

There was a thread about this before, someone posted about a whistle noise, Here are what they can be. I have a supercharger noise happens when im in motion or not, when the rpms are above idle to about 3.5k. I have a vac prob its coming from the rear valve cover gasket which is leaking oil. Im going to do it this saturday coming up and while i have everything off I will install my mevi.

-check your alternator, Listen to it when your at idle turn on your lights if it makes noises then its your alt.

-Bad pully bearings, I thought my tensioner was done but I replaced it. Take a long long flat head screwdriver, Let the car idle put the driver right on the tensioner pully bolt and rev up the motor lightly put your ear on the driver and listen to see if its coming from there.

-Belts, Spray some Wd on them and listen to see if the noise goes away.

-Exhaust leak, Get your car on a lift check the exhaust, put your hand near it without touching and try to feel where exhaust might be coming out from.

-Best bet is that you might have the same problem As I do. check to see if your power steering pump is soaked in oil. Take that screwdriver and put it on these locations while slightly rev the engine.
*Tensioner pully
*Intake manifold
*Front and rear valve covers
*Alternator
*Steering pump unit (If possible when Car is in the air)
Remeber someone has to be pressing on the car so the noise can be heard then you try and locate it.

Check all your hoses, I hope I helped you, good luck with your problem.

ok who in this thread does not understand that when you have any type of hole in the intake system or have it opened up in any way u can hear the whistle because thats how our engine is! he has a hacked airbox which means its opened up to the sound of the engine as if he has a shortram just not as loud of an engine noise. though as i said when mine was like that the whistle is louder with the stock airbox than shortram. THERE IS NO PROBLEM stop trying to say there is

Dude...calm down. I only pointed toward the A/C because he mentioned the defroster. If it was his airbox, wouldn't it do it w/the defroster off?

its just the fact again when the ac compressor is running it creates more vaccum and hence it makes the noise louder which would make it more audiable through the "hacked" part of the airbox. ....im calm

It's the whistle from the hacked air box. If he's got the hacked airbox, thats it. My hacked air box did it. My CAI does it. My short ram did it. JoosDawg is right on this one.

tavarish, and wavridr85 you guys are gay lol if youve never had a hacked box then dont talk and obviously you dont know whats even going on. Look at the 1st post here it happens more when about to 3K rpm with the defrost on, this is not even an issue if it was anything else you would be able to hear it even at idle and throughout the rev range why dont we see here.... nope not at idle he says. so NO theres not a problem with alternator or any other thing just a hacked freeflowing airbox having fun in the warmness

Let me state one thing, A belt noise will be louder than your intake, Intake doesnt make that much of a noise to notice that on the opposite side of the engine are pullies,belts,alt,a/c compressor/powersteering pump.. If one of those things go bad you will def hear it over an intake. I have a stillen intake. A VAC leak doesnt sound like an intake, A bad bearing on a pully isnt even close to sounding like the intake. The alternator going bad makes a whinning noise and because more evident when you have more of a load on as in lights and HU system. Its common knowlegde Intakes dont make any turbo noise nor a whinning noise. Its more of a air rushing through a tube sound which intenses as rpms get higher. Again I hope you fix whatever it is.

What do you mean it creates more vacuum?

If the original poster came back and said it happens with the A/C compressor off, I'll agree with you 100%. That's the main factor here: If it happens only when the A/C compressor is engaged, I'd say the noise is related to the compressor. You can argue that the A/C compressor puts extra load on the engine...fine, but accelerating puts load on the engine as well, thus the noise should occur here too.

I hope, for his sake, it's just the intake whistle.

My alternator made a noise just like that when it was starting to go out. Running the AC draws current for the fans, so maybe that's why the noise is related to the AC.

There was a recall, but it was only for certain cars. Call the dealer and give them your VIN to find out if your car is covered under the recall.

Its weird this noise. I just started having this same noise on my 88 maxima. I think I have narrowed it down to the alternator or my power steering pump from what I have read in this thread. I thought it might have been the power steering pump, but the alternator, I never thought of. Well, if it did not help this guy yall helped me.

I had this same issue with my old 95 maxima. the noise was soft at first, but then got louder as the weeks went by. it was driving me nuts. i got it looked at, and it turned out to be my A/C compressor. Emax02 and I worked on the car one night, and bypassed the belt for the A/C, and the noise was gone! it was the ball bearings inside the compressot that was failing, and was making the bad noise. it actually made my car feel faster due to all the drag the a/c compressor was making.

hope that helps

Your alternator is going bad. Or possibly your battery, they start to wine when they are about dead. Or when you put a huge load on them like your defrosters+engine fans running(when far right button pushed on controls)+heater fans= lots of drain at the battery. Get it tested for free at like autozone or which ever parts store ya got around.
