i dont have any pics, but i cut 2 big holes, one in the side(facing driver's side wheel well), and one in the front, facing the front of the car. I removed the resonator that came in from the snorkel( just a piece of plastic), i didnt cover it with anything..i dont know if that's bad or not, but my car sounds mean....one of the best free mods IMO...

I pretty much gutted my airbox, not much of the bottom of it remaining... it sounds nice and deep and gives me some of the gas mileage I lost when I had a JWT short ram back...

yeah, cut out most of the box, just leave the bottom, right and back sides. I do feel an increase in gas mileage, although this mod encourages you to floor it...for the awesome sound...and i also feel an increase in throttle response...but it could be my imagination.

for a full writeup, check the faq's, but you dont have to...it's pretty self explanatory....

ALL UR STUPID RESONATOR DOES IS REDUCES THE SOUND OF THE INTAKE. I TOOK it out and its just a big @ss empty box. yur saved me about 20lbs, j.k
anyways, hacked airbox is a priceless mod and all should do it. it decreases restriction, increases sound, and hey, its free.

i wonder how it would sound if i had just drilled a small hole.

It's well known around here that the resonator is actually an important part of the intake. Many who have had the resonator put back on after driving without one notice a difference.

so thers like 400 other threads about this. its all the FAQ's if some of you took the time to read. and the resonator is there for acoustic function for the genius who thinks otherwise. tahts why when you take it off your exhaust after the cat conv, it'll be loud and raspy.

I get the feeling people are thinking about two different resonators. There is one in the intake system that runs underneath the battery tray; you'll see it if you look. The other is in the middle of the exhaust system.

We are not discussing the exhaust resonator.

yeah, but my point was they function the same way, they problabyh convert sound waves into physical vibrations that cut down the noise.

the resonators are only there to cut down on the noise. I also noticed better throttle response when removing the bottom part of the box and flipping it over. I just recently put the bottom part of the box back on and i was suprised at how quiet the car really is. I forgot my car was really quiet at first.

I agree that hacked air box is the best intake setup fo the maxima.

All the other intakes just make noise and dont give any gaines.

Im gona see if i can make some kind of sheild to keep the engine air away from the air box when i do mines

Basically when you do this mod, there's no coming back to stock which is bad if you want to sell the car. you will need a new air box
correct?

What are the Pros and Cons regarding this Mod?
If this will noticeably increase my MPG, I will define***y do it.
But if it's going to give me problems passing Emissions in NJ, it's outta the picture.

Does anyone have a sound clip of this mod BY ITSELF without any other performance mods?

You can easily replace the bottom half of the airbox with one from a junkyard. No Biggie.

A new lower half at least.

If I do ever sell this car (as a beater I guess), the new owner can deal with it. Not like I have the stock exhaust either. That rusted off last year.

The sound clips I provided were with no other mods. Just the hacked box. And only hacked on that one side as shown in the pictures.

These were taken with two holes cut out of my stock airbox and no other mods. Crappy quality, but you'll hear the difference for sure.

Does the resonator need to be removed or can I just drill the hole on the top of the airbox ?
