you shouldn't be drilling ANY holes in the top of the airbox, unless you want the air that is going into your intake to be unfiltered...ONLY cut holes in the bottom, that way the air still is filtered through the panel filter.

edit: beat me to it^^^haha

nice vids, you'd swear by that first vid that you have a lightened flywheel, rpms jumped from 2K to about 5K so fast. right after you finish making the turn and hammered it.

Sup guys? Im completely new to this forum, but I've been readin posts for a long time. I have a 96 auto. About this mod, i have it done. I took out the whole bottom half and found a way to keep the filter on. Sounds great to me. I took this idea from a thread i read months ago!

I just did the hacked air box mod today. Sounds so niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. I got a 3" hole saw and drilled 2 holes in the side of the box. Then, I took a 1.5" hole saw and cut out a hole in the side facing the driver's fender. I love the sound it makes when I floor it. I think I have the limited edition V8 VQ. HAHA

This is not new!

The hacked airbox mod isn't new. And the purpose of hacking the airbox is to get more growl, there's no performance gains from it. You all should know too that liberally hacking the box allows hot air from the engine to enter it! We all know what cold/dense air does to the engine's performance so I expect that you all know too the downside of hot air entering the engine. Also, the intake resonator is that square looking device between the throttle body and MAF. Just removing this will cause havoc into your engines. Replacing it with a midpipe give off more growl at WOT but disturbs the flow of air into the intake system causing a turbulence which negatively affects performance. Removing the snorkel and keeping that opening uncovered introduces power robbing hot air into your engine. So what did this mod do? Gave you all more noise and introduced more hot air into your engines.

Read the stickies guys! Also read the Maxmods website.

here is a recent thread in the dyno forum. this is on a 3.5 so i am not saying that you or i would get the same results but the principles should be fairly similar.

i have a hacked airbox, removed the intake resonator, budget y and custom cat back/resonator with a bullit (?) muffler... now im a car guy so i dont mind the sound inside the car. when rpms are under under 2500ish rpm its pretty loud in the car. at WOT it sounds pretty mean, but i have had some passengers who have made comments about the car being loud inside. from outside the car it doesnt sound too too loud and i have heard good feedback from friends and such. i got the exhaust done in august and am still considering getting a 5th gen muffler... just my $.02

The intake resonator is needed for decent HP gains in NA engines. This is why we all put them back on.

There are other mods u can do that give u the same effect and you can return it back to stock.
Anyone save this page? it appears to be down now...

How to make a $15 upper intake on a 4th gen Maxima.
http://www.drwebdesign.com/mymaxima/upperintake.html

All you need is a cone filter and youd drill out the rivets in the metal lip that connects to the rest of your intake piping. Ill see if i can find this.

Well i found the link (courtesy of brianV)... Heres what i did to my intake:

http://www.brianv.net/mods/filter/

But instead of using pliers to pry apart the metal lip that connects your airbox to the MAF... use a drill bit, 3/16" and drill out the poprivets.. then if you ever have to go back to stock to smog it etc.. you can simply use screws or re-poprivet it.

if you dont want to take the metal lip off your stock box you can just buy a MAF adapter plate.
