Need help diagnosing O2 sensor problem...

Hey guys,
my SES light popped on this morning completely randomly. I ran the codes and got 2:
P0130 - Front O2 Sensor Circuit (Bank 1)
P0325 - Knock Sensor

I checked the FAQs and couldn't find any more info than the basic problem definition that I typed above. I can't use search either, so I figured that one of you guys might know off the top of your head what needs to be fixed/replaced?

Do I need a new O2 sensor? Does 325 go hand in hand with 130, or are they 2 separate problems?
These are 2 codes that I've never seen thrown before.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.

I have not seen the codes personally as I took my car somewhere to have the diagnostic done. However, I can tell you that they are 2 seperate problems. I recently changed my KS and that affects the pick up. If you have noticed your car lagging, changing the KS is like night and day. The cost me $180 from the dealer. You can only get it from them. I found instructions here but can't remember where. It's a ways back. Unfortunately, now I am faced with changing my O2 sensors but have to wait til tomorrow to find out which of the 3 is causing the problem. (I took it to Tires Plus and they couldn't narrow it down for me. I have to go to a dealer). The front two O2 can affect your gas mileage in a big way. The third, found on the cad itself, I'm somewhat uncertain about. I think from your description, it is the front one that's causing the problem.

That's all I can tell you. I'm still in the learning stages on this one, too. Good Luck!

200kstrong, you are awesome! i've only owned the car since 106k (it has 111k now) but it really feels like a dog compared to the way it performed just a few months ago. i guess i'll replace the knock sensor to start, see how the car feels, and go from there.

my gas mileage has suffered a little bit too, but i figured it was just from me being on the gas so much since the car definitely doesn't move as briskly as it did before. once the knock sensor is out of the way i'll see if i can tackle the O2 sensor.

thanks so much for the advice.

i must disagree. try the o2 sensor first. sometimes the o2 sensor will go bad and in turn trip the knock sensor code as well, even when the knock sensor is in good condition. and also, many times, the knock sensor in itself is fine, but the harness is the thing that is causing the code. Do your homework before paying big money to stealerships. you can also save a slew of money if you try to od them yourself. buy a couple tools, and get the satisfaction of fixing it for half the price. instructions are in the stickies

omg dude your car must drive like a honda sloth style. replace the O2 then see codes somtimes will trip the KS although if it hasent been replaced do that too it never hurts especially to get you out of safe mode thats the WORST!

if your car drived over 10 years or 60,000 miles, you sould be change the O2 sensors front left and right side because the sensor's tip get clogged by carbon residue.sometime call this is a lazy sensor.it may be worlk, but no good.

Derek,
I think you have a bad O2 sensor. I just replaced mine today(Both) and it makes a world of difference. I had no codes, it was just time 102k miles. When I removed them they were sooty looking. About $112 form oxygensensors.com. I think I would replace them before I tamper with the knock sensor. JMHO

o2 code usually trips the ks, but the ks doesnt trip on the cel. so the ks could of been on the ecu for a while, reset your codes and drive it for a little while. and then if the cel comes back on, then i would suggest you to change your o2 sensor. reset the code, and then check for codes after a little bit of driving,(remember the ks will not trip on the cel) if you get 0304 or P0325 its time to replace it as it may be cracked.

thanks for the help guys. i had considered that the O2 might have gone bad and tripped the KS, but i wasn't sure where to start. since the KS can be accessed from the top i figured i'd try to do that first, since i wouldn't have lift access for a while. unless of course there is some way to access the O2 sensors from the top. I'm not very familiar with the location of alot of stuff on these cars as I've been driving a Ford for the past few years.
Thanks again for the help. I'll replace the O2 and the knock sensor together and see what happens.

Welcome to the Max!

Killcrap hit it on the head as far as one possibly tripping the other. I have heard that it can also work the other way that the KS can trip the O2. Either way, both will need to be replaced at some point. Not that I am suggesting dumping $ unnecessarily.

Good luck! Look forward to the update. You can find the instructions for changing the KS and O2 on one of the stickies. That's what I used.

I found the links for you on changing both the ks and O2. Here they are:
Two good article on KS replacement:
http://www.skippynet.com/maxima/knocksensor.htm
http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/507

How to replace 95-96 O2 sensors (upstream and downstream) http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.p...52&postcount=24

If you need other instructions for stuff Motorvate.ca has a lot of info. I found these links under 4th Gen How-to Section. Lots of good stuff in there. Also, AutoZone has a pretty good database, too.

I just kicked out a (0503) Front Right Heated O2 sensor. I am debating on what O2 sensor to get. Anyone have a suggestion?
