odometer only works when cold

any ideas why the dang odometer in my 95 max only works till the car is warm?
ive taken the gauge cluster out 3 times to clean it and the last time i put a very light sewing mach oil all over the gears but no matter what soon as the car warms up odometer stops working.

note when it was -3f in kansas the thing worked for 99.3 miles but recently it only goes about 8 miles before stopping .if it is above 50F im lucky to see it work for 3 miles

My 95 did the same thing back at about 120K (now 170K). It was intermittent for awhile and then the odometer just went dead, but the speedo was fine. I didn't want to cause any strange records on my carfax about suspected odometer tampering, so I ordered a new one from the dealer and had them roll it forward to approx the miles I had at the time. I don't remember exactly, but it was something like $200+ So I have an extra white-faced speedo in my garage with a bad odometer...anybody want it real cheap?

I definatly sounds like a cold solder connection. If you willing you can remove your cluster and pul out the speedo unit check the back of it for a solder connector that has a slight crack around the connection. I'm sure thats what it is. Youmay want to try it before going for big bucks at the dealer for repair.

95 was a bad year for odometers. You'll need to replace it. Unless you dont care.

You have to give your VIN and the current mileage to the dealer you buy it from (I used Pinnacle Nissan) and they'll calibrate it for you and ship it out.

I've done this for a few maximas and two altimas too.
