Do you guys leave this on all the time??
In my 91 I used to leave it off around town (city driving under 55 mph or under 3K rpm)
I would turn it on if on the freeway.

Now I notice on my 99, that it automatically turns itself on when I start the car even if I had it off when I shut the car off. Is this normal? My 91 didn't do this. It would stay how I had it when I turned off the car.

So what are everyones thoughts?

Hmmm, in my car (97 GLE) it seems to stay in the last position last used when I start the car back up. Also, my OD button feels as if its stays outwards when its off so I guess just by looking or touching the button you can tell if its on or off. I basically leave it off too when I know I'm going to be doing a lot of stop and go driving, especially in parking lots for example. I used to leave it on, but sometimes the tranny gets kinda confused when I want to speed up and slow down real quick, it wouldn't know what gear to stay in.

I have a 98 and this irks me too... wouldn't it be so much more convenient if it stayed off when you wanted it to? I think they changed the mechanism in the button after 97 to touch button instead of clicking in or out, so the computer just resets when you shut off/turn on the car since the button isn't in a set position. Anyone know if this is possible to modify?

hehheheheeeheheheeeeeeeeee...I just noticed I had that button last week. I haven't touched it yet...I suppose you're supposed to use it on the highway to get better mileage? I'm coming from a DX '89 accord (carb! ;p) so I'm not used the all these gizmos yet! ^_^

(yes, I am slightly moronic lately...must be all the warm weather)

the little button..

i have my o/d on at all times... except in snow conditions I switch to off and shift to 2nd gear. Should the o/d button be off at certain times?
i have a 97 and it does turn off/on simply by pressing the little button. 99 might operate a lil differently.

Digital vs. Analog

I think the 4th gen and maybe 5th gen up to 97 has an analog OD switch. For some reason, Nissan switched to digital after that.

Wouldn't it be better to have it turns itself off when you turn off the car. Doesn't the car shift later when OD is off? I would want it off when i turn the car back on. Good thing I don't have auto and have to deal with this

I usually have my O/D on when I'm driving around in the city... but if I'm just messin around with friends, racing and stuff, I usually turn it off till it hits 3rd gear... the extra revs usually come in handy!

Hey everyone, it is normal for the OD to automatically turn on after the car has been shut off, regardless of whether it was on or off before you turned the car off. It says so in the owners manual.

Yes, my 99 does the same thing. On start up it is by default OD on. It doesn't stay in the last psoition, but resets itself. This maybe Nissans way of saying you should use OD more often than not.
